This past Friday was ‘National Cheese Lovers Day’
According to Rachel’s 2023 BS Central desk calendar
(and yes, there are still some available, come on in and
get them) this past Friday, January 20th, was “National
Cheese Lovers Day”.
We all love cheese, right? Of course, everyone has
their preferred cheese, although it is good to have several
varieties to fit the occasion.
Parmesan on spaghetti, how can it get any better
than that (canned stuff is okay, but get the real deal and

YUM. A grilled ham, bacon and cheese with American on
whole wheat or sour dough, or a special treat, on Mom’s
home-made bread now that we got an electric knife to
make slicing it easier? Wowsers! Or a good ol’ roast beef
sandwich with cheddar and mayo or horse radish sauce,
or my favorite condiment to that one, French’s yellow
mustard and pepper? Forget the Miracle Whip (not to
be confused with Cool Whip), too sweet for roast beef,
best for deviled eggs on the side to go with that sammich.
Monterey Jack for a good taco? Cottage and/or Ricotto
with lots of Motza for a messy kitchen and finally a messy
plate of lasagna? Back to a good sprinkle of lasagna!
And speaking of Parmesan, it is an Italian hard,
granular cheese produced from cows’ milk and aged at
least 12 months.
Then, speaking of cheddar, it is believed to have a long
history, with some experts speculating that production
began around the 12th century in a small English town
called Cheddar. Cheddar is a versatile cheese that can be
eaten young or matured for several years, altering the taste
from mild to quite sharp with time.
Lots & lots & lots of cheese. Rachel says you can
never put on too much cheese, so we did a test: forty-seven
egg noodles and three pounds of Velveeta cheese. All was
good.
Ooh, and then there’s Limburger cheese. As all the
above-mentioned cheese varieties are made from cow’s
milk, here’s another moo. It is known for its strong smell
caused by the bacterium Brevibacterium linens. Strong
smell is an absolute understatement! A good whiff of
Limburger cheese smells more like what a cat buries on a
regular basis.
The list of cheese goes on, and on, and on, cows’ milk
being the overwhelming producer of cheese... thank God
for those merciless cows that fart and burp and cause
all that so-called “global warming”, “climate cooling” or
“climate change” or whatever the liberal leftists want to
you believe — and basically supply us with m-m-m-m....
cheese.
Here’s a cheesy little story by Shirley Siefert:
I sat down to write to write a cheese story and
remembered I had cheese stix in the fridge. I took a couple
out and my cat came running and begged for a bite. I didn’t
know she could smell cheese still in the shrink wrap! It
reminded me of a “smell the cheese” story from 30 + years
ago.
If you have ever traveled to Wisconsin, going to a
cheese factory is a must. Transporting it to Montana in
the car is tricky. Kelly’s Uncle Leo, Aunt Margaret, and

Aunt Nona found that
out the hard way. It was
a hard block of Limburger
cheese. Aunt Nona was
saving room in the car
and packed the Limburger
in her suitcase, Uncle Leo
had his in a box in the
back seat. On the first day
of travel, they spent the night in a hotel. The next morning
they traveled a ways and then stopped for breakfast. Uncle
Leo, a restaurant foody, saw a cafe with lots of cars in the
parking lot. He deduced that it must be a good cafe, like
Glasgow’s Johnny Cafe. When they went in, people really
stared at them and then put their heads together to talk
about them and then look again. The travelers thought it
was because they were not home towners.
The same thing happened the next morning when
they settled on a cafe and at each eatery all the way home.
They got home later in the evening, so Aunt Nona took
the cheese out of the suitcase to the refrigerator. It was
good to be home so unpacking was delayed. The next
day the unused clean clothes were hung to un-wrinkle.
Everything else was taken care of.
Three days later, Aunt Nona was getting dressed up to
go out and took a shirt and pants from the travel clothes.
As she pulled the shirt over her head the stench nearly
gagged her. It smelled like the car that she traveled in and
very much like the Limburger cheese!
She didn’t realize that while traveling she got so used
to the odor that it wasn’t noticeable. At that point, she
didn’t laugh because she was so embarrassed. It dawned
on her why all the diners stared at them.
The limburger cheese! When telling the story, she
said, “All those diners must have thought we’d sh*t our
pants.” She was so happy they were all strangers!

Abern, Dees lead Nashua to a W

Nashua coach Kyle Gorman has a mix of players from
veterans to rookies. He starts three seniors and two freshmen.
That combination song with another freshman played a good
defensive game Thursday night. The result – a 48-33 victory
against Lustre Christian on Nashua’s Homecoming night.
Nashua also defeated Richey-Lambert 37-30 Friday night.
Nashua managed to win the game despite 28 turnovers.
But the Lions also had their problems hanging onto the ball,
finishing with 23 turnovers.
The Porcupines (5-7, 2-4) broke away from the Lions in the
second half after taking a 20-15 lead into the break. Nashua led
despite stunning the ball over 17 times, while Lustre Christian
had only eight turnovers.
Six-foot senior Tia Dees scored the first bucket of the
second half, then added a three-point play later for a 27-22 lead.
Teammate and senior Alexis Murdock added two free throws
and a bucket in between Dees’ points. Freshman Guinevere
Abern drained a three-pointer with 40 seconds left in the third
for a 33-24 lead.
The Porcupines went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth
period behind Dees’ five points and four from Abern. Freshman
Gracyn Sibley capped off the Nashua scoring with her bucket.
The Lions had problems with Nashua’s defense with
the Porcupines double-teaming Alexis Reddig. Reddig is the
Lions leading scorer, averaging in double-figures. The junior
had 15 points and nine rebounds in the game. half to take the win.
Also scoring for the Lions were Grace and Hannah Brown with
five points each, Aubri Holzrichter, Hope Marottek, Lauryn
Holzrichter, and Abby Olfert two apiece.
Nashua was led by Dees with a double-double, scoring 14
points and hauling down 16 rebounds. Abern also had 14 points,
including a three-pointer, Sibley had nine with a trey, Murdock
six, Kaitlyn Miller three, and Madison Harris two.
The Lions (4-9, 3-3) also lost to Culbertson 37-31 Saturday
night in Lustre. The Cowgirls took an 18-14 lead at the break,
then held off the Lions for the win. Destiny Thompson had 14
points for the Cowgirls, Makena Hayge had 11, Megan Granbolis
six, Ivy Colvin four, and Alicyn Ator two.
Reddig paced the Lions with 12 points, Grace Brown
added 12, Aubii Holzrichter five, and Olfert two.
No. 1 North Country had its biggest test of the season
Saturday night when the Mavericks hosted Circle in Hinsdale,
coming away with a 58-31 win. Alexa and Madeline Moline had
a bucket each ro give /circle a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter.
It took the Mavericks a while to get their offense on track, going
on a 10-2 run to close out the frame. Paige Wasson gave the
Mavericks their first lead, 5-4, on her three-pointer.
North Country (13-0, 6-0) started pulling away in the
second period, taking a 23-15 lead into the break. Wasson and
Alexis Moline traded three-pointers to start the quarter. The
Mavericks went on a 6-0 run for a 19-9 lead. Circle came back to
make it 19-15, but Teagan Erikckson and Kendall Scheffelmear
scored the last two buckets of the half for the eight point lead.
The Mavericks scored off of two Circle turnovers. The Wildcats
had 10 turnovers in the half.
The Mavericks broke the game open in the third quarter
with a 19-2 run for a 42-17 lead with 1:55 to play. Circle had only
two field goals in the third, a bucket by Madeline Molina and a
three from Kambrie Kountz. The Wildcats turned the ball over
10 times in the third.
Circle (10-3) managed to outscore the Mavericks 11-10 in
the fourth, but that was against North Country’s second string.
Wasson fired in a game-high 23 points, including three
3-pointers to lead the Mavericks. Erickson followed with 14
points, Scheffelmear had six, Shelbi LaBrie and Mattea McColly
four each, Kora LaBrie three, and Cienna Strommen two.
Grace Gackle and Alexis Moline led Circle with seven
points each, Madeline Moline had six, Kountz five, Emma
Murphy, Laura Guldborg, and Tina Hogan two apiece.
Wasson netted 24 points in a 63-26 win over Dodson
Friday night. The Mavericks ran out to a 28-9 first half lead, then
coastedd to the District 3C win.
Erickson added 12 points, Kora LaBrie seven, McColly six
BaiLee McColly five, Scheffelmaier four, Berkeley Hillman and
Jessa Erickson two each and Josie Brown one.
Katata KillEagle had 16 points for the Coyotes, Lindsey
Fetter five, Jazlyn KillEagle three, and Lilyian Turensplenty two.
Camrie Holum scored 12 points to lead Scobdy-Opheim
to a 43-29 win over Dodson. The Spartans used a 23-13 second
Carrie Taylor and Kaytie Aanstad added nine points each,
Mia Handran had six, Mya Green four, and Kennadi Cromwell
three.
Fetter led Dodson with 12, Jazlyn KillEagle had nine,
Kataya KillEagle and Turnsplenty three each, and Emma Colle
two.
The Spartans (13-3, 5-1) also thumped Frazer 58-17 after
taking a 29-8 first half lead. Taylor fired in 15 points to lead the
Spartans, Green and Kayla Avery had seven each, Avery Wolfe
and Aanstad six each, Hadran and Mady Willis four each, Claire
Lekvold and Cromwell three each, Oli Leininger two, and Kazee
Tower one.
Baily Beston led the Bearcubs with five points, Shakira
Beston had four, Angelina White and Audrey Smoker three
each and Lianna Jackson two.
