EXT. STREET – NIGHT

Black Screen, keypad tone plays

JOHN
(talking calmly through phone)
I’ve got a delivery for you. McDonald’s on Levitt.

Pause, silence, keypad tone plays again

JOHN
(stern)
Listen, I know you’re getting these. I can see the read
icon. I get it, it’s late, if there was anyone else who could
do it I would ask them.

Silence

JOHN
(resigned)
Your deliveries have been down, HAL. If you don’t get them
up, well, we’re going to have a problem.
Destination is on the app, it’s not too far for you. Call me
when you make it.
(pauses)
Or just, uh, send me a thumbs up or something.

Fade in to CLOSE UP at eye level of HAL, sat on the top tube of

his pushbike, which is parked on a pavement. He is holding his
PHONE up and listening through a pair of WIRED EARBUDS. He is
bathed in an artificial yellow hue. Behind him lights shine from
various businesses.

HAL sighs. He looks down at his phone. Cut to HIGH ANGLE over his
shoulder. We see he is on low battery. Cut back to CLOSE UP. The
camera moves away into a LOW ANGLE MEDIUM shot, showing him sat on
his bike. He puts his foot on the pedal and sets off.

EXT. FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. NIGHT

Wide shot from outside of FAST ROOD RESTAURANT. HAL can be seen
through the window interacting with an unseen stranger. He places
a parcel in his backpack. He gets up and exits the store. He can
be seen unlocking and mounting his bike, before pedalling towards
the road. He bikes away from the position of the camera until he
is out of sight.

EXT. HOUSE. NIGHT

WIDE SHOT, showing the front of the house. No lights in the

windows. HAL enters the frame from the right, pulling into the
driveway and dismounting the bike. MEDIUM SHOT from the
perspective of the door. HAL shoulders his backpack and begins to
reach in for the parcel. He then notices the door is ajar. He
moves closer, knocking on the door frame. He pauses. Total
Silence.

He unclips a flashlight from the front of his bike, hesitating

before switching it on. He follows this action by removing his
earbuds. Cut to MEDIUM, Over the shoulder. We see the hallway
bathed in the light of the torch. HAL glances over his shoulder,
before he gently pushes the door open and begins to move into the
property.

INT. HOUSE. NIGHT

Continuing the MEDIUM OTS shot, HAL proceeds into the hallway,
combing his light over the staircase and bureau. Papers are
scattered haphazardly, as if tossed in a hurry. HAL is startled by
a noise from the adjoining room. He hesitantly opens the door,
directing his flashlight to the floor as he does so, The noises
continue. He slowly enters the room. The camera follows on his
right side, but does not yet follow into the room.
His flashlight is still directed at the floor, and he begins to
raise it toward the source of the noise. He freezes. The camera
begins to move into the room, crossing behind his left shoulder.
The beam reveals a DEAD BODY, encircled by a pool of blood. We see
HAL’s reaction, his eyes widening and breathing deepening. The
beam, now shakier in his hand, continues its journey upwards. A
MASKED INTRUDER, dressed head to toe in black is rifling through a
bag – the source of the noise. He has his back turned.
The INTRUDER’S head abruptly turns to address the light source.
HAL gasps, bolting out into the hall and towards the door he came
in by. But the door is now blocked by MASKED INTRUDER 2, who is
carrying Hal’s bike into the house.
Cornered, HAL darts clumsily up the stairs, shrugging his backpack
as he goes. Both INTRUDERS meet in the hallway, and observe his
retreat without making immediate pursuit. INTRUDER 1 points
upstairs. INTRUDER 2 nods, pointing out the door.
Upstairs, HAL darts into the first open room he sees, the
bathroom. He shuts the door behind him, dropping his flashlight on
the floor. Inside, he realises his mistake; the furnishings is
bolted down. He makes a futile effort to remove the sink from the
wall. He looks down to his flashlight, illuminating the bathroom
with the beam. Breathing heavily, he switches it off, before
propping himself against the door. He draws his phone from a
pocket, and his face is briefly illuminated in its glow as he

frantically keys the touchscreen. But before he can finis his

attention is grabbed by someone slowly make his way up the stairs.
HAL is left in near-darkness, still wearing his bicycle helmet and
high contrast glasses. We see another source of light creep in,
this time coming from under the door. The brightness intensifies
as the source gets closer. MASKED INTRUDER is outside with a
flashlight of his own.
HAL’s breathing is no longer just heavy, but frantic, each breath
forced by the stress he is feeling. Suddenly, an impact buckles
the door. HAL recoils, backing to the opposite wall. A second
impact. We see HAL’s face, his face clammy and his eyes wide. A
third impact and the door swings open. The MASKED INTRUDER backs
off, now also breathing heavily from the effort of breaching the
door. In one hand he directs the flashlight at HAL. The other is
holding a bat.

INTRUDER raises the bat. Out of options, HAL does the last thing
he can – charging the INTRUDER. HAL runs at the man, head low and
arms outstretched. INTRUDER swings and catches HAL’s head, his
helmet taking the blow. His charge becomes a tackle, colliding
with the INTRUDER’S waist and sending both men to the ground. The
flashlight flies free, resting a few feet away and still aimed at
the entangled men. HAL is initially on top, trying to wrestle the
bat from INTRUDER’S hand.

INTRUDER strikes HAL in the face with his free hand, and wrestles
his way on top, dropping the bat in the process. He pins HAL’s
upper arms with his knees and draws a knife from his pocket. He
brings it over HAL’s face in an overhand grip.

HAL frees one of his arms and brings it up to grab INTRUDER’S

forearm, Now wrestling to stop the knife from being plunged into
his face. He seems to be fighting a losing battle. INTRUDER leans
over HAL, removing his knee from HAL’s arm. HAL now struggles
between keeping the knife at bay and reaching for the dropped bat
with his free hand.

Seconds before the bat makes contact, HAL swings, catching

INTRUDER in the face. INTRUDER grunts and drops face first, the
knife dropping Denying him the chance to recover, HAL strikes
again. He wrestles himself out from under the incapacitated
intruder, rising to deliver more force with subsequent blows.
INTRUDER’s grunts of pain subside. We see blood begin to splatter
HAL’s face. He halts only after striking INTRUDER around a dozen
times.

HAL takes a moment to compose himself, seemingly disassociated

from his situation. He stares down on the body, his look a mixture
of shock and grim content. Blood is streaming from a head wound

concealed by his helmet. The right side of his face is badly

bloodied.

Regaining his senses, he looks around. The house has returned to

silence. Bat in hand, he slowly makes his way downstairs. He
reaches his bike, left propped against the hallway wall. He looks
out the doorway at the empty street outside. He begins to roll his
bike, then hesitates. He looks back at his backpack, left where he
dropped it on the stairs. As he moves to retrieve it, we see
INTRUDER 2 approach the house and enter the door. HAL is oblivious
as INTRUDER 2 approaches.

INTRUDER 2 grabs HAL in a chokehold. HAL attempts to swing the bat

at him, but his reach is too short. He stumbles back, slamming
against a wall. They continue to scuffle in the hallway. HAL
delivers futile blows to the intruder’s hips. He begins to lose
strength, his movements slowing. INTRUDER 2 relaxes his grip and
HAL’s head slumps forward.

HAL suddenly brings his head back, slamming it into INTRUDER’S 2

nose. INTRUDER cries out in pain and falls to the ground. HAL
grabs his bike, lifting it over INTRUDER’S neck. INTRUDER tries to
bring his arms up, too late.

HAL slams the front wheel down with force. Putting the bike down,
He looks over INTRUDER 2’s body. He is rasping as if breathing
through a straw; his windpipe has been crushed.

HAL kneels down next to INTRUDER 2. The raspy breathing continues,

muffled by the mask. His arms are still held up, but more as a
primal instinct than a conscious effort. HAL pushes the arms out
of the way, and reaches for INTRUDER 2’s face. HAL pulls down the
mask and the raspy, strained breathing continues unmuffled. HAL
robotically runs INTRUDER 2’S pockets, locating a phone. He
switches it on and holds it up, Unlocking it and keying it twice.
He hesitates, his finger hovering over the keypad. He looks to his
left, towards the exit.

Closing track fades in (Rispaa – In Psychosis)

Cut to WIDE SHOT of the outside of the house. HAL exits the
building with his bike. He sets off, pedalling out of frame. Cut
to CLOSE UP of HAL on the bike. His shocked demeanour begins to
wear off, the reality of his situation bearing down on him. As he
continues to pedal up the road, his expression shows visual
distress. He grabs a water bottle from the bike frame, and drinks,
then proceeds to spray the contents on his bloodied face. He
finally halts. His breathing is heavy. The music fades.

He looks down at his phone. One new voice message from JOHN

JOHN
Uh, Hal, don’t try to make any deliveries tomorrow. It’s one
thing not taking a delivery, but, uh, taking it and then
failing to deliver? We can’t tolerate that, we’re letting you
go.

HAL stares at the phone, a mixture of confusion and frustration on

his face. He keys up the next message.

JOHN
I, uh, need to tell HR that you acknowledged your, uh,
termination, so, yeah, send me an “ok” or a thumbs up or
something.

HAL pauses over the phone, then Inhales deeply. He throws the
phone full force into the ground.
