English literature seems to have born in the fifth century, circa 450, with the settlement of

Anglo-Saxons and Germanic in Anglo-Saxon England. This remote literary era is known as “Old
English Literature”. This period was represented by the writing of genres as epic poetry,
hagiography, sermons, chronicles and riddles. The most famous work of Old English literature is
Beowulf

After the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, written Old English became less common.
Thanks to the new aristocracy, French became the standard language of society, giving birth to the
“Anglo-Norman”. From then until the twelfth century, Anglo-Saxon underwent a gradual transition
into Middle English. The first work of this language was the translation from Anglo-Norman of the
legend of King Arthur. A literary genre, Romance, was of outstanding relevance during this period
