VOCABULARY USED TO DESCRIBE FAMILIAL CONNECTIONS

GENERAL:
Family- rodzina
Next of kin- krewny, w sensie prawnym, nie biologicznym.
parents- rodzice.
Association- związek między osobami.
An ancestor- przodek.
A descendant- potomek.
Immediate family member- najbliższy członek rodziny.
Adult- dorosły.
Couple- para.
Bachelor- kawaler.
Elder- starzec.
Junior- młodzieniec.
Senior- senior
To be someone’s senior/ junior- być od kogoś starszym/ młodszym.
To be the elder/older sibling- być starszym rodzeństwem.
To be the younger sibling- być młodszym rodzeństwem.

CLOSE/IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS:


Mother/ Mum, Mummy- Matka/ mama, mamusia itp.
Father/ Dad, Daddy, papa- Ojciec/tata, tatuś itp.
Siblings: sister, brother- rodzeństwo: siostra, brat.
Husband- mąż.
Wife- żona.
Children: daughter, son- dzieci: córka, syn.
Grandfather/ grandpa, granddad- Dziad, dziadek, dziadziuś itp.
Grandmother/ grandma, granny, nana- Babka, babcia, babunia itp.
Grandchild- wnuk.

Aunt, uncle- wuj, ciotka
Niece, nephew- siostrzenica/bratanica/siostrzeniec/bratanek

TOGETHER BUT NOT MARRIED?


A boyfriend/ girlfriend- chłopak, dziewczyna.
A paramour- jw., ale implikuje związek o poważniejszej naturze, niż chłopak i dziewczyna.
Partner- jw. Ekwiwalent słowa paramour.
Civil companionship/ partnership- małżeństwo cywilne, także związek partnerski.
fiancé, fiancée- narzeczony, narzeczona.
Engangement- zaręczyny
The bride, the groom- panna młoda, pan młody.

FAMILIAL VS FAMILIAR
Remember that we say “familial” when relating to family connection, not “familiar”. “Familiar” can be used
to describe the connection with friends. But mostly it is used to describe just someone or something you
know. You have a familiar connection with your friends and familial connection with family members.

Use of the vocabulary:


Family dinners often end up in ludicrous arguments concerning politics and other silly concepts like that.
As the saying goes, with family it’s best in the picture.
Some people say that they aren’t familiar with familial sentiment. That mustn’t be true!
A love-hate relationship is what most siblings would describe feelings between them. They irritate and
annoy each other, yet they still would jump into the flames for one another.
To get married means to formalise the union between two consenting adults. But the formal process looks
fairly different in different countries.
