For factory applied interior waterborne acrylic wood finishes

Regional Product EMEAI

Availability

Product PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer is a water-based acrylic dispersion recommended for
Description factory applied interior wood finishes requiring early hardness, block resistance and
sandability. The wet and dry clarity of clear films is outstanding especially over light wood like
pine.

Applications It can be used in clear formulations as a sealer and topcoat or in lightly pigmented (PVC 20%)
coatings.

Characteristics of the product:

 Excellent early sandability
 Early block resistance
 Outstanding mar and scratch resistance

Formulation Appearance
Guidelines Clarity, warmth and grain definition of clear lacquers based on PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic
Polymer are comparable to the performance of typical nitro-cellulose or acid catalyzed
lacquers. The best appearance is achieved over light wood such as pine or walnut.
PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer is delivered at a pH between 8 and 9. This may cause
discoloration over oak and therefore we recommend the use of PRIMAL™ E-2955 Acrylic
Polymer as a sealer for oak before coating over with PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer
based lacquer.

Fast Dry
Coatings based on PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer dry extremely fast comparable to
solvent-borne cross-linked lacquers. The hardness development of PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER
Acrylic Polymer can be seen from Figure I. Besides the fast dry, the films are easy to sand,
giving fine powder when sanded and very little clogging of the sand-paper.
PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer can be used as a blend vehicle with other DOW resins
where improved early block properties are required.

Stain Resistance
PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer is a unique topcoat candidate where good stain
resistance are comparable to nitro-cellulose lacquers, in combination with fast speed of cure
and excellent appearance over light wood. Figure II shows the stain resistance over light wood
for lacquers based on PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer. We do not recommend the use
of PRIMAL™ EP-6060 ER Acrylic Polymer in topcoats that are cleaned with high pH cleaning
agents such as in the case of table tops.

Stain Resistance Test

The lacquers were sprayed on pine panels (100- 150 gr/m2 wet film) and dried in the Controlled
Temperature Room (CTR, 22°C, 55%RH) for 10 minutes. This was followed with a drying
period in the oven for 10 minutes at 60°C. After cooling for 5 minutes in the CTR the panels
were sanded and the second coat was applied (80-100 gr/m2). Stains were tested after two
weeks drying in the CTR. The stains were allowed to rest on the coating for different periods of
time: ammonia (2 minutes); water (24 hours); acetone (2 minutes); ethanol (6 hours) and coffee
(6 hours).
