Module 1 provides an overview of Cloud Manager and the Cloud Volumes ONTAP
TRANSCRIPT system.

PAGE# 2

PAGE TITLE THE DATA FABRIC

Your data fabric powered by NetApp is a strategy for simplifying and integrating the
TRANSCRIPT orchestration of data services for enterprise applications and cloud-native applications. A
data fabric provides the freedom to choose any compute and developer environment, in
any combination, across hybrid multicloud environments, to accelerate digital
transformation. The data fabric delivers consistent and integrated hybrid cloud data
services for data visibility and insights, data access and control, and data protection and
security.

PAGE# 3

PAGE TITLE NETAPP CLOUD DATA SERVICES: SERVICE OFFERINGS

NetApp Cloud Data Services provide a full stack of services to deploy, run, monitor,
TRANSCRIPT maintain, and manage cloud services in the biggest public clouds so that customers
don’t need to.
The first step in the Cloud Data Services journey starts with the location of data. For
example, the data location could be in a private or public cloud like Amazon Web
Services or AWS; Google Cloud; or Microsoft Azure. The location could also be a SaaS
application like Microsoft Office 365 or Salesforce, or the data location could be in an on-
premises data center or service provider data center.
Cloud Data Services provide many offerings, which are grouped into the following four
categories:
 The Cloud Storage category, which includes Azure NetApp Files, NetApp Cloud
Volumes Service, and NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP
 The Data Services category, which includes NetApp Cloud Sync service; NetApp
Cloud Compliance service; NetApp Cloud Tiering; NetApp SaaS Backup, formerly
Cloud Control; NetApp Cloud Backup Service; and NetApp Global File Cache
service
 The Cloud Controls category, which includes NetApp Cloud Manager
 The Cloud Analytics category, which includes NetApp Cloud Insights

PAGE# 6

PAGE TITLE NAS VOLUMES POWERED BY NETAPP ONTAP SOFTWARE

NAS volumes powered by NetApp ONTAP software come in many forms. From a
TRANSCRIPT features perspective, these forms should be familiar to anyone who has managed
ONTAP software.
You are probably familiar with ONTAP software running on FAS and AFF controllers or
ONTAP Select software running on commodity hardware. With Cloud Volumes Service
and Azure NetApp Files, ONTAP software also runs in the cloud.
You can also look at how these offerings are constructed. For example, ONTAP 9
software runs on engineered systems, ONTAP Select runs on commodity systems,
Cloud Volumes ONTAP runs as a virtual appliance, and Cloud Volumes Service and
Azure NetApp Files run as a service.
A major difference between these volumes is how they are managed and upgraded.
 With systems that run ONTAP software or ONTAP Select, customers are
responsible for managing their systems and volumes.
 With Cloud Volumes ONTAP, the cloud provider is responsible for the infrastructure,
but the customer manages the virtual appliance instance and volume.
 With Cloud Volumes Service and Azure NetApp Files, NetApp manages the system,
and the customer needs to manage only the volume.
Another difference to consider is performance characteristics. To put these attributes in
context, though, performance depends on infrastructure or subscription choices. For
example, a volume that is on HDD differs greatly from a volume that is on or SSDs.

3 Cloud Volumes ONTAP Architecture

© 2020 NetApp, Inc. This material is intended for training use only. Not authorized for reproduction purposes.
MODULE 2: CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP ARCHITECTURE

PAGE# 1

PAGE TITLE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP ARCHITECTURE

Module 2 discusses Cloud Manager and the Cloud Volumes ONTAP system
TRANSCRIPT components.

PAGE# 2

PAGE TITLE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP ARCHITECTURE

In this module, you learn about the Cloud Volumes ONTAP storage architecture, how the
TRANSCRIPT storage can be easily managed, and how to maintain storage availability. You also learn
about licensing options.

PAGE# 3

PAGE TITLE STORAGE ARCHITECTURE

TRANSCRIPT Lesson 1, Storage Architecture.

PAGE# 4

PAGE TITLE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP: STORAGE ARCHITECTURE

Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses cloud-provided resources from AWS, Azure, or Google
TRANSCRIPT Cloud as back-end storage. The cloud provider disks, or cloud disks, appear as standard
disks in Cloud Volumes ONTAP software. The backing storage can be either Standard
Storage on HDDs or Premium Storage on SSDs, depending on desired performance
characteristics. These disks are combined to form aggregates, which contain volumes for
client application data. You can pair cloud disks with object storage from the cloud
provider to tier inactive data to low-cost object storage.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP runs as a virtual machine or instance in the cloud. The virtual
machine or instance type that you choose in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud determines
the processing power of the Cloud Volumes system, with varying combinations of CPU,
memory, storage, and networking capacity.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP presents storage to client applications through FlexVol volumes.
Volumes contain either files when used in a NAS environment or LUNs when used in a
SAN environment.

4 Cloud Volumes ONTAP Architecture

© 2020 NetApp, Inc. This material is intended for training use only. Not authorized for reproduction purposes.
PAGE# 5

PAGE TITLE AWS DISK TYPES: UNDERLYING STORAGE

You need to choose the underlying EBS disk type. You should choose the configuration
TRANSCRIPT that meets your requirements for performance and cost.
In AWS, the number and size of disks within an aggregate depend on the version of
Cloud Volumes ONTAP that you are running. The underlying disk type can be a single
Amazon EBS storage type or a tiered storage configuration that includes an Amazon
EBS performance tier and an Amazon S3 capacity tier.
Some Amazon EC2 instance types include local NVMe storage, which Cloud Volumes
ONTAP uses as Flash Cache. Flash Cache speeds access to data through real-time
intelligent caching of recently read user data and NetApp metadata. It is effective for
random read-intensive workloads, including databases, email, and file services.

PAGE# 6

PAGE TITLE AZURE DISK TYPES: UNDERLYING STORAGE

When you choose the Cloud Volumes ONTAP single-node configuration in Azure, the
TRANSCRIPT number and size of disks within an aggregate depend on the version of Cloud Volumes
ONTAP that you are running. The underlying Azure managed disk type can be either
Premium SSD Managed Disks, Standard SSD Managed Disks, or Standard HDD
Managed Disks, whichever meets your requirements for performance and cost.
When you choose the Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA pair configuration in Azure, Premium
Page Blobs are used for the underlying storage. Premium Page Blobs are high-
performance SSD-based storage, designed to support I/O-intensive workloads with
significantly high throughput and low latency.
You can pair single-node and HA underlying storage with Azure Blob Storage to tier
inactive data to low-cost object storage.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP also supports the Standard_L8s_v2 VM type with single node,
bring-your-own-license or BYOL systems in Azure. This VM type includes local NVMe
storage, which Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses as Flash Cache. Deploy new systems by
using this VM type or modify existing systems to use this VM type, and you can
automatically take advantage of Flash Cache intelligent caching.

PAGE# 7

PAGE TITLE GOOGLE CLOUD PLATFORM DISK TYPES: UNDERLYING STORAGE

You need to choose the underlying Google Cloud Platform disk type. You should choose
TRANSCRIPT the configuration that meets your requirements for performance and cost.
In Google Cloud, the number and size of disks within an aggregate depend on the
version of Cloud Volumes ONTAP that you are running. You can pair persistent disks
with a Google Storage bucket to tier inactive data to low-cost object storage.

5 Cloud Volumes ONTAP Architecture

PAGE# 8

PAGE TITLE DATA TIERING: OVERVIEW

You can reduce storage costs by using high-performance disks as a performance tier for
TRANSCRIPT "hot" data and an object store as a capacity tier for "cold" data.
Tiering data is a good choice if your data changes frequently or if you use Cloud
Volumes ONTAP for disaster recovery or long-term retention.
 After an aggregate has reached 50% capacity, Cloud Volumes ONTAP tiers inactive,
or “cold” data to a cost-effective object store. This process frees up the more costly
performance tier for "hot" data.
 When you replicate a volume for disaster recovery or long-term retention, data for
the destination volume resides in the capacity tier.
 If you activate the cold data that resides in the capacity tier, the data gradually
moves to the performance tier as it is read.

PAGE# 9

PAGE TITLE TIERING DATA FROM READ-WRITE VOLUMES: TIERING POLICIES

Cloud Volumes ONTAP can tier inactive data on read/write volumes to cost-effective
TRANSCRIPT object storage, freeing up the performance tier for hot data. To enable data tiering at the
volume level, you must select a volume tiering policy when you create or modify a
volume. You can select a different policy or disable tiering for each volume separately.
Some tiering policies have an associated minimum cooling period, which sets the time
that user data in a volume must remain inactive for the data to be considered "cold" and
be moved to the capacity tier.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP supports the following tiering policies for tiering data from read-
write volumes to object storage:
 Auto: After an aggregate reaches 50% capacity, Cloud Volumes ONTAP tiers cold
data blocks in a volume to a capacity tier. The cold data includes Snapshot copies
and cold user data from the active file system. The cooling period is approximately
31 days.
If read by random reads, the cold data blocks in the capacity tier become hot and
move to the performance tier. If read by sequential reads, such as those associated
with index and antivirus scans, the cold data blocks stay cold and do not move to the
performance tier.
 Snapshot Only: After an aggregate reaches 50% capacity, Cloud Volumes ONTAP
tiers cold user data of Snapshot copies that are not associated with the active file
system to the capacity tier. The cooling period is approximately two days.
If read, cold data blocks on the capacity tier become hot and are moved to the
performance tier.
 None: Keeps data of a volume in the performance tier, preventing it from being
moved to the capacity tier.

PAGE TITLE TIERING DATA FROM DATA PROTECTION VOLUMES: VOLUME TIERING POLICIES

Cloud Volumes ONTAP can tier data from a data protection volume to a capacity tier. If
TRANSCRIPT you activate the destination volume, the data gradually moves to the performance tier as
it is read. If you choose to disable tiering, the data protection volume data is kept in the
performance tier, preventing it from being moved to the capacity tier.

PAGE TITLE CLOUD CENTRAL ACCOUNTS

The integration of Cloud Manager with NetApp Cloud Central provides several benefits,
TRANSCRIPT including a simplified deployment experience, a single location to view and manage
multiple Cloud Manager systems, and centralized user authentication. With centralized
user authentication, you can use the same set of credentials across Cloud Manager
systems and between Cloud Manager and other data services, such as the Cloud Sync
service. Resetting your password is also easy if you forget it.
A Cloud Central account provides multi-tenancy and enables you to organize users and
resources in isolated workspaces:
 A single Cloud Central account can include multiple Cloud Manager systems that
serve different business needs. Because users are associated with the Cloud
Central account, there’s no need to configure users for each individual Cloud
Manager system.
 Within each Cloud Manager system, multiple users can deploy and manage Cloud
Volumes ONTAP systems in isolated environments called workspaces. These
workspaces are invisible to other users, unless they are shared.
When you deploy Cloud Manager, you select the Cloud Central account to associate
with the system.
Cloud Manager represents storage systems as working environments. A working
environment can be a single-node Cloud Volumes ONTAP system or an HA pair, an on-
premises ONTAP cluster in your network, or an ONTAP cluster in a NetApp Private
Storage configuration.

PAGE TITLE USERS, WORKSPACES, AND SERVICE CONNECTORS

The Account Settings widget in Cloud Manager enables Account Admins to manage a
TRANSCRIPT Cloud Central account. Account Admins manage the users, workspaces, and service
connectors that are associated with the account.
Users are NetApp Cloud Central users that are associated with a Cloud Central account.
Associating a user with an account and one or more workspaces in that account enables
those users to create and manage working environments in Cloud Manager.
When you associate a user, you assign them a role:
 Account Admins can perform any action in Cloud Manager.
 Workspace Admin can create and manage resources in their assigned workspace.
In Cloud Manager, a workspace isolates any number of working environments from other
working environments. Workspace Admins can’t access the working environments in a
workspace unless the Account Admin associates the admin with that workspace.
A service connector is part of Cloud Manager. It runs much of the Cloud Manager
software. The service connector runs on the virtual machine instance that was deployed
in your cloud provider, or on an on-prem host that you configured. You can use a service
connector with more than one NetApp cloud data service. For example, if you already
have a service connector for Cloud Manager, you can select it when you set up the
Cloud Tiering service.

PAGE# 14

PAGE TITLE SECURITY: ENCRYPTION OF DATA AT REST

Cloud Volumes ONTAP software supports data-at-rest encryption.

TRANSCRIPT When you launch a Cloud Volumes ONTAP system in AWS, you can enable data
encryption using the AWS Key Management Service (or AWS KMS). Cloud Manager
requests data keys using a customer master key (CMK). For AWS KMS details, see the
AWS documentation.
Azure Storage Service Encryption for data at rest is enabled by default for Cloud
Volumes ONTAP data in Azure. No setup is required. Customer-managed keys are not
supported with Cloud Volumes ONTAP.
Google Cloud Platform data-at-rest encryption is enabled by default for Cloud Volumes
ONTAP. No setup is required.
You can use NetApp Volume Encryption (NVE) with native AWS, Azure, or Google
Cloud Platform encryption, which encrypt data at the hypervisor level. A NetApp Volume
Encryption license is automatically installed on each Cloud Volumes ONTAP system that
is registered with NetApp Support. However, the Cloud Volumes ONTAP system must
be located within a Global Trade Compliance (or GTC) acceptable country.
NetApp Volume Encryption is a software-based technology for encrypting data at rest
one volume at a time. Data, Snapshot copies, and metadata are encrypted. Access to
the data is given by a unique XTS-AES-256 key, one per volume. Cloud Volumes
ONTAP supports NetApp Volume Encryption with an external key management server,
not an onboard key manager. You can enable NetApp Volume Encryption on a new or
existing volume by using the CLI or System Manager. Cloud Manager does not support
NetApp Volume Encryption.

PAGE# 15

PAGE TITLE SECURITY: ANTIVIRUS AND RANSOMWARE PROTECTION

Cloud Volumes ONTAP and Cloud Manager software also protect data against viruses,
TRANSCRIPT malicious code, and ransomware.
You can use integrated antivirus functionality on ONTAP systems to protect data from
viruses or other malicious code. ONTAP virus scanning, called Vscan, combines best-in-
class third-party antivirus software with ONTAP features that give you the flexibility that
you need to control which files get scanned and when. For information about the
vendors, software, and versions supported by Vscan, see the NetApp Interoperability
Matrix Tool. Configuration and management of the antivirus functionality on ONTAP
systems is documented in the ONTAP 9 Antivirus Configuration Guide.
Ransomware attacks can cost a business time, resources, and reputation. Cloud
Manager enables you to implement the NetApp solution for ransomware, which provides
effective tools for visibility, detection, and remediation. Cloud Manager identifies volumes
that are not protected by a Snapshot policy and enables you to activate the default
Snapshot policy on those volumes. Snapshot copies are read-only, which prevents
ransomware corruption. They can also provide the granularity to create images of a
single file copy or a complete disaster recovery solution. Cloud Manager also enables
you to block common ransomware file extensions by enabling the ONTAP FPolicy
solution.

PAGE# 16

PAGE TITLE WORM STORAGE

You can activate write once, read many (WORM) storage on a Cloud Volumes ONTAP
TRANSCRIPT system to retain files in unmodified form for a specified retention period. WORM storage
is typically used to retain critical files in unmodified form for regulatory and governance
purposes and to protect from malware attacks. WORM storage is powered by SnapLock
technology in Enterprise mode, which means WORM files are protected at the file level.
You cannot activate WORM storage on individual volumes; WORM must be activated at
the system level.
After a file is committed to WORM storage, it cannot be modified until the retention
period has expired. A tamper-proof clock determines when the retention period for a
WORM file has elapsed.
After the retention period elapses, you are responsible for deleting any files that you no
longer need.

PAGE# 17

PAGE TITLE FLEXCACHE SUPPORT

A FlexCache volume is a storage volume that caches NFS read data from an origin
TRANSCRIPT volume, or source volume. Subsequent reads to the cached data result in faster access
to that data.
You can use FlexCache volumes to speed up access to data or to offload traffic from
heavily accessed volumes. FlexCache volumes help improve performance, especially
when clients need to access the same data repeatedly, because the data can be served
directly without having to access the origin volume. FlexCache volumes work well for
system workloads that are read-intensive. In the example, the FlexCache volume is
located on the Cloud Volumes ONTAP system. The roles could also be reversed, with
the source located on the Cloud Volumes ONTAP system. Also, a source volume could
be an origin for many FlexCache volumes.
Cloud Manager does not provide management of FlexCache volumes at this time, but
you can use the ONTAP CLI or ONTAP System Manager to create and manage
FlexCache volumes.
Starting with the 3.7.2 release, Cloud Manager generates a FlexCache license for all
new Cloud Volumes ONTAP systems. The license includes a 500-GB usage limit.

PAGE# 18

PAGE TITLE HIGH AVAILABILITY

TRANSCRIPT Lesson 3, High Availability

PAGE# 19

PAGE TITLE SINGLE NODE ARCHITECTURE

A single-node instance of Cloud Volumes ONTAP software runs within the cloud provider
TRANSCRIPT network. The network can be an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (or Amazon VPC), Azure
Virtual Network (or Azure VNet), or Google Cloud Platform Virtual Private Cloud (or
VPC) within the cloud provider subnet.
The Cloud Volumes ONTAP software runs as a virtual machine on the cloud provider
compute resources. The compute resource can be either an Amazon EC2 instance,
Azure virtual machine, or Google Compute Engine virtual machine.
The Cloud Volumes ONTAP software also utilizes the cloud provider storage resources.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP systems use the cloud provider disks in one of three ways: the
boot disk and root disk are used as system disks and the data disks, which are used to
create data aggregates. Data aggregates are used to create data volumes, which clients
can be given access to.
A single-node instance of Cloud Volumes ONTAP software relies on the cloud provider
for data availability. If a node were to go down, data on the Cloud Volumes ONTAP
system would become unavailable.

PAGE# 20

PAGE TITLE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP HIGH AVAILABILITY FOR AWS

In addition to the single node configuration, Cloud Volumes ONTAP for AWS also
TRANSCRIPT includes a high-availability (or HA) option. The HA configuration provides nondisruptive
operations and fault tolerance in AWS. You can deploy a Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA
configuration in a single availability zone or across multiple availability zones.
The Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA configuration has synchronous replication between the
two Cloud Volumes ONTAP nodes, which offers a recovery point objective (or RPO) of
zero seconds. If a node goes down, the other node provides continued data service to
clients. You can use a Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA pair as an active-active or active-
passive configuration. In an active-active configuration, both nodes serve data to clients.
In an active-passive configuration, the passive node responds to data requests only if it
has taken over storage for the active node.

PAGE# 21

PAGE TITLE HA ARCHITECTURE FOR AWS: MULTIPLE AVAILABILITY ZONES

In a Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA configuration, each node has its own disks and a mirror
TRANSCRIPT copy of the partner instance’s disks. A mediator instance provides a communication
channel between the nodes to assist with storage takeover and giveback processes.
A Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA configuration across multiple availability zones can enable
HA if a Cloud Volumes ONTAP node fails or an availability zone becomes unavailable.
When a Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA configuration is spread across multiple availability
zones, floating IP addresses are required for NAS data access from within the VPC. The
floating IP addresses can migrate between nodes when failures occur. These floating IP
addresses are not natively accessible to clients that are outside of the VPC. You should
review requirements for floating IP addresses and route tables before you deploy an HA
configuration across multiple availability zones.
For iSCSI, Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses multipath I/O and asymmetric logical unit
access (or ALUA) to manage path failover between the active-optimized and indirect
data paths.

PAGE# 22

PAGE TITLE HA ARCHITECTURE FOR AWS: SINGLE AVAILABILITY ZONE

Deploying a Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA configuration in a single availability zone can

TRANSCRIPT provide HA of your data if an instance that runs a Cloud Volumes ONTAP node fails. All
data is natively accessible from outside the VPC. Because this configuration is in a
single availability zone, it does not require floating IP addresses. You can use the same
IP address for data access from within the VPC and from outside the VPC.
Cloud Manager launches the two HA nodes and the mediator in an AWS spread
placement group. The placement group reduces the risk of simultaneous failures by
spreading the instances across distinct underlying hardware. This feature improves
redundancy from a compute perspective and not from a disk failure perspective.

PAGE# 23

PAGE TITLE HA PAIRS IN AZURE

A Cloud Volumes ONTAP HA pair in Azure provides enterprise reliability and continuous
TRANSCRIPT operations in case of failures in your cloud environment. In Azure, storage is shared
between the two nodes.
It is important to understand the components in an Azure HA configuration:
 The Azure Standard Load Balancer manages incoming traffic to the Cloud Volumes
ONTAP HA pair.
 The Availability Set ensures that the nodes are in different fault and update domains.
 Customer data resides on Premium Storage page blobs. Each node has access to
the other node’s storage.
Additional storage, which is not shown, is also required for boot and root data:
 A node’s boot data resides on a Premium SSD Managed Disk.
 A node’s root data resides on a Premium Storage page blob.
Storage takeover and giveback is similar to that of a physical ONTAP cluster, storage in
an Azure HA pair is shared between nodes. Connections to the partner’s storage
enables each node to access the other’s storage in the event of a takeover. Network
path failover mechanisms enable clients and hosts continue to communicate with the
surviving node. The partner gives back storage when the node is brought back on line.
For NAS configurations, data IP addresses automatically migrate between HA nodes if
failures occur.
For iSCSI, Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses multipath I/O and asymmetric logical unit
access (or ALUA) to manage path failover between the direct and indirect data paths.

PAGE TITLE MANAGING THE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP SYSTEM

TRANSCRIPT Module 4 discusses how to manage the Cloud Volumes ONTAP system.

PAGE# 2

PAGE TITLE USING CLOUD MANAGER

TRANSCRIPT Lesson 1, Using Cloud Manager

PAGE# 3

PAGE TITLE WORKING ENVIRONMENTS: CREATE AND DISCOVER

You can create a Cloud Volumes ONTAP system, as you learned previously.
TRANSCRIPT Cloud Manager can also discover an existing ONTAP cluster, an existing Cloud Volumes
ONTAP deployment, or an existing Cloud Volumes Service volume in an AWS region.

PAGE# 4

PAGE TITLE WORKING ENVIRONMENTS: CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP CREATION OPTIONS

When you create a new working environment, you have a choice of using preconfigured
TRANSCRIPT packages or creating your own configuration.
Examples of Cloud Volumes ONTAP for AWS preconfigured packages include proof-of-
concept and small workloads, database and application data production workloads, cost-
effective disaster recovery, or highest performance production workloads. Choosing a
preconfigured package automatically creates a configuration using the appropriate
licensing tier of disk type and size, and the instance or virtual machine type.
If you want to control the storage size, speed, virtual machine processing power, or
select an older version of Cloud Volumes ONTAP, choose create your own configuration.

PAGE# 5

PAGE TITLE WORKING ENVIRONMENTS: MANAGE

The Cloud Volumes ONTAP systems that you create appear in the working
TRANSCRIPT environments. To manage the system, simply select the system’s icon. In addition to
systems that you create, systems that you discover appear.

PAGE# 6

PAGE TITLE PROVISIONING STORAGE: NFS AND CIFS

When you create a Cloud Volumes ONTAP working environment, you typically create
TRANSCRIPT the initial volume, as shown earlier. In the example, a volume was created for NFS
clients. If you need more storage, you can provision new volumes by selecting Add New
Volume. A wizard starts and prompts you to enter the details for the volume. In the
example, a volume is being created for CIFS clients.

PAGE# 7

PAGE TITLE PROVISIONING STORAGE: PERSISTENT STORAGE FOR KUBERNETES

Cloud Manager can automate the deployment of NetApp Trident on Kubernetes clusters,
TRANSCRIPT so you can use Cloud Volumes ONTAP as persistent storage for containers.
Getting started includes a few quick steps:
1. Start by verifying that you have network connectivity between Cloud Manager and
the Kubernetes cluster and between Cloud Volumes ONTAP systems and the
Kubernetes cluster.
2. Upload the Kubernetes configuration file to Cloud Manager. After you upload the file,
Cloud Manager installs Trident on the Kubernetes cluster.
3. Connect your working environments to the Kubernetes cluster, and start provisioning
Persistent Volumes.
You use native Kubernetes interfaces and constructs to request and manage Persistent
Volumes.

PAGE# 8

PAGE TITLE VOLUME MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

You can use Cloud Manager to perform other volume management functions. You can
TRANSCRIPT perform a space-efficient clone of a volume, perform Snapshot copy operations, or
change the disk type and storage tiering policy in the cloud provider.
Changing the storage tier changes the volume’s underlying disk types and might require
a new aggregate. For example, if you are changing from HDD to SSD and no SSD
aggregate exists, a new aggregate is created that supports the request.
For information about how to access the volume, click Mount Command.

5 Managing the Cloud Volumes ONTAP System

© 2020 NetApp, Inc. This material is intended for training use only. Not authorized for reproduction purposes.
PAGE# 9

PAGE TITLE AGGREGATE MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

You can use Cloud Manager to perform aggregate management functions. For example,
TRANSCRIPT you can add disks to increase the size of the aggregate.
Cloud Manager can create aggregates for you when it creates volumes, or you can
create aggregates yourself. The benefit of creating aggregates yourself is that you can
choose the underlying cloud provider disk types and storage tiers, which enables you to
size your aggregate for the capacity or performance that you need.

PAGE# 10

PAGE TITLE DATA TIERING: ENABLE TIERING

Cloud Volumes ONTAP supports data tiering in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud
TRANSCRIPT Platform. Data tiering is powered by FabricPool technology.
You enable storage tiering when you create a new working environment. First, you
choose the performance tier disk type that best suits your workload, and then, you
enable tiering.
When you enable data tiering in AWS, Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses Amazon EBS as a
performance tier for hot data and Amazon S3 as a capacity tier for inactive data.
Changing a system’s tiering level enables you to choose a different Amazon S3 storage
class.
When you enable data tiering in Azure, Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses Azure managed
disks as a performance tier for hot data and Azure Blob Storage as a capacity tier for
inactive data. Changing a system’s tiering level enables you to choose a different Azure
storage tier.
When you enable data tiering in Google Cloud Platform, Cloud Volumes ONTAP uses
persistent disks as a performance tier for hot data and a Google Cloud Storage bucket
as a capacity tier for inactive data.

PAGE# 11

PAGE TITLE DATA TIERING: TIERING DATA FROM READ-WRITE VOLUMES

If you enable tiering when you create a Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance, tiering is
TRANSCRIPT enabled for both the aggregate and the first volume. The default tiering policy for the
volume is typically auto, which can be changed later.

PAGE# 12

PAGE TITLE DATA TIERING: TIERING DATA FROM READ-WRITE VOLUMES EXAMPLE

This example shows a volume with 2.5 gigabytes of data. The volume is configured with
TRANSCRIPT the auto tiering policy. Over time, the cold data blocks in the performance tier are moved
to the capacity tier. For example, if 500 megabytes of data moves to the capacity tier,
500 megabytes is freed up in the performance tier.

PAGE# 13

PAGE TITLE UPDATE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP SOFTWARE

You can upgrade to the latest version of Cloud Volumes ONTAP software directly from
TRANSCRIPT Cloud Manager. Cloud Manager notifies you when a new version is available.
Alternatively, you can place the Cloud Volumes ONTAP software image on an HTTP or
FTP server and then initiate the software update from Cloud Manager.

PAGE# 14

PAGE TITLE MANAGING CLOUD PROVIDER RESOURCES

Cloud Manager monitors and manages cloud provider resources. You can examine a
TRANSCRIPT cost breakdown for compute, storage, and data transfers. Monitoring your cloud provider
costs is currently supported with only AWS.
Cloud Manager can change the configuration of Cloud Volumes ONTAP instances,
which changes the underlying virtual machine instance type. Cloud Volumes ONTAP
software is restarted in this scenario, which is disruptive unless you are using an HA
configuration.

PAGE# 15

PAGE TITLE USING CLOUD MANAGER APIS

Cloud Manager is 100% API driven, so any actions that you can perform through GUI
TRANSCRIPT wizards or commands in Cloud Manager can also be implemented through API calls.
You can use APIs to launch a Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance in Cloud Manager or
record the API request that is used to launch this particular Cloud Volumes ONTAP
instance. You can then copy the data and use the same API information to launch an
identical Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance.

MANAGING CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP: CLOUD MANAGER AND SYSTEM

PAGE TITLE MANAGER
You can provision additional NFS and CIFS storage for your Cloud Volumes ONTAP
TRANSCRIPT systems from Cloud Manager by managing volumes and aggregates. If you need to
create iSCSI storage, you should do so from System Manager. All disks and aggregates
must be created and deleted directly from Cloud Manager. You should not perform these
actions from another management tool. Doing so can affect system stability, hamper the
ability to add disks in the future, and potentially generate redundant cloud provider fees.
Also, if you would like to set up quotas on NFS or CIFS volumes, you use System
Manager.

PAGE# 18

PAGE TITLE SVMS: ACCESS TO DATA

A storage virtual machine (or SVM) contains one or more data volumes to store client
TRANSCRIPT data and LIFs that provide client access to data. All ONTAP systems use SVMs, which
provide secure multitenancy within the system. However, Cloud Volumes ONTAP
supports only a single SVM.

PAGE# 19

PAGE TITLE SYSTEM MANAGER: LAUNCHING FROM CLOUD MANAGER

You can launch System Manager from within Cloud Manager. To connect to System
TRANSCRIPT Manager, the machine you are connecting from must have a network connection to the
Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance.

PAGE# 20

PAGE TITLE SYSTEM MANAGER: NAVIGATION

Your version of System Manager might look a little different, depending on the version of
TRANSCRIPT Cloud Volumes ONTAP software. The example that is displayed here is from a cluster
that runs ONTAP 9.6 software.
After you log in to System Manager, the main window opens. You can use the Guided
Problem Solving, Technical Support Chat, or Help menus at any time. Click the Setup
icon to manage users, roles, and other cluster settings.
The default view is of the cluster dashboard, which can display cluster details such as
alerts and notifications, health, and performance.
You use the navigation menu on the left side to manage the cluster. For example, under
Storage, you use the SVMs, Volumes, and LUNs menu items to provision iSCSI storage.

MODULE 5: CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP DATA PROTECTION FEATURES

PAGE# 1

PAGE TITLE CLOUD VOLUMES ONTAP DATA PROTECTION AND PRIVACY FEATURES

TRANSCRIPT Module 5 discusses the Cloud Volumes ONTAP data protection and privacy features.

PAGE# 2

PAGE TITLE INTEGRATED DATA PROTECTION FEATURES

TRANSCRIPT Lesson 1, Integrated Data Protection Features

PAGE# 3

PAGE TITLE DATA PROTECTION FEATURES: OVERVIEW

Cloud Volumes ONTAP can protect volume data in two ways:

TRANSCRIPT  Snapshot copies, which are read-only images of a volume that capture the state of
the file system at a point in time
 Replication, which copies data and Snapshot copies from a source volume to a
destination volume based on the replication policy that is selected
The system can create Snapshot copies automatically based on a schedule, or you can
create them manually. The replication policy specifies the type of replication and how the
replicated Snapshot copies are processed.

PAGE# 4

PAGE TITLE DATA-REPLICATION RELATIONSHIP: CREATE

Cloud Manager provides an easy GUI-based drag-and-drop functionality to create data

TRANSCRIPT protection relationships in the hybrid cloud. In this example, you are creating a protection
relationship between an on-premises system as the source and Cloud Volumes ONTAP
software that is running in AWS as the destination. Likewise, you could create a
relationship from Cloud Volumes ONTAP software to an on-premises system or another
Cloud Volumes ONTAP system.

4 Cloud Volumes ONTAP Data Protection Features

© 2020 NetApp, Inc. This material is intended for training use only. Not authorized for reproduction purposes.
PAGE# 5

PAGE TITLE REPLICATION POLICIES

There are three types of replication policies:

TRANSCRIPT  The mirror policy, which uses SnapMirror technology, is typically used for disaster
recovery.
 The backup policy, which uses SnapVault technology, is typically used for long-term
retention of backup copies.
 The mirror and backup policy, which uses both SnapMirror and SnapVault
technologies, is typically used when both disaster recovery and long-term retention
are needed.

PAGE# 6

PAGE TITLE MIRROR POLICY

A mirror policy replicates data and newly created Snapshot copies to a destination
TRANSCRIPT volume. You can use these Snapshot copies to protect the source volume in preparation
for disaster recovery or for one-time data replication.
In the event of a disaster, you can activate the destination volume for data access at any
time.

PAGE# 7

PAGE TITLE BACKUP POLICY

A backup policy replicates data and specific Snapshot copies to a destination volume.
TRANSCRIPT Typically, the retention period for backup copies is longer than the retention period for
the source volume.
If data is ever corrupted or lost, you can restore data from these Snapshot copies.

PAGE# 8

PAGE TITLE TIERING DATA FROM DATA PROTECTION VOLUMES: ENABLE TIERING

When you replicate a volume, you can either enable or disable data tiering. However, the
TRANSCRIPT volume tiering policy can’t be changed on a replicated volume after the relationship has
been created.

PAGE# 9

PAGE TITLE DATA TIERING: EXAMPLE OF TIERING DATA FROM DATA PROTECTION VOLUMES

When tiering replication data, the backup policy is used. When the replication
TRANSCRIPT relationship is created, all the blocks are considered cold and are immediately moved to
the capacity tier. In this example, some files have been recovered, which moved about
500 MB of data to the performance tier.

PAGE TITLE CLOUD SYNC

Cloud Sync is the NetApp service for rapid and secure data synchronization. You might
TRANSCRIPT need to transfer files between on-premises NFS or CIFS file shares and Amazon S3
object format. You might need to transfer files between Azure Blob Storage, IBM Cloud
Object Storage, or the NetApp StorageGRID solution. Cloud Sync moves the files where
you need them quickly and securely.

PAGE# 15

PAGE TITLE CLOUD SYNC: OVERVIEW

The Cloud Backup Service is an integrated feature of Cloud Volumes ONTAP in AWS,
TRANSCRIPT accessible through Cloud Manager. You can integrate a working environment with the
Cloud Sync service at any time. When you integrate a working environment, the Cloud
Sync service syncs data from the selected volumes to a single Amazon S3 bucket. The
integration works with Cloud Volumes ONTAP working environments, as well as ONTAP
clusters that are on-premises or part of a NetApp Private Storage (NPS) configuration.
To sync the data, the service launches a data broker instance in your VPC. Cloud Sync
uses one data broker per working environment to sync data from volumes to an Amazon
S3 bucket. After the initial sync, the service syncs any changed data once per day at
midnight.
See the Cloud Sync page on Cloud Central for information about support for additional
services, hyperscalers, and targets.

PAGE# 20

PAGE TITLE CLOUD COMPLIANCE: OVERVIEW

The Cloud Compliance service is an add-on service for Cloud Volumes ONTAP,
TRANSCRIPT provided by NetApp at no extra cost. Activating the Cloud Compliance service requires
deploying a cloud instance, for which your cloud provider charges. No charges are made
for data ingress or egress because data does not flow outside of the network.

When you enable Cloud Compliance on one or more Cloud Volumes ONTAP systems,
Cloud Manager deploys a Cloud Compliance instance in the same VPC or VNet as
Cloud Manager. Cloud Compliance scans the unstructured data on each volume for a
range of personal information using an AI learning process. It maps your organizational
data, categorizes each file, and identifies and extracts entities and predefined patterns in
the data. The result of the scan is an index of personal information, sensitive personal
information, and data categories.
