Data: Case Study

The case study has 2 parts which cover:

1. Technical Casework: Questions on SQL
2. Case Study: Business & Product
Please feel free to use online resources, we want to assess your logical thinking and problem
solving approach.
The assignment looks long but once you start working on it. Please make assumptions if you feel
something is missing.
Please share the assignment within 4 working days.
All the best, speak to you soon!

A. Tech: SQL
In this assignment we ask you to answer three questions. You may use data from two datasets
that we have provided you. Note that we expect your answers to be based on these datasets –
there is no need to use external data sources. Make sure to include all information and/or
insights that you find relevant and, of course, feel free to explain why you chose to use a certain
approach in a separate file.

We have two tables available: transaction and item.

Please write a SQL statement to answer the questions below:

1. What is the total GTV for each item?

2. What is the most popular item that users order on their third purchase? If any.
3. How long is the shortest interval (in minute) the store has gone without purchase and
refund?
4. For users who ordered at least three times in the store, how much dollar they have spent
until their third purchase?

B.1 Case Study: Business

An ecommerce marketplace company Y has experienced 6X growth in terms of Revenue in the
last 2 month after they launched bulk order feature and inventory management feature on the
app for sellers and enabled buyers to choose shipping partners and order from multiple sellers at
once.
The founders are super impressed with the pace, however they want to understand in depth
what has led to this growth and how can the team sustain as well as improve the pace in the
coming quarter.
The heads of product - both seller and buyer side, as well as heads of growth - both seller
and buyer side along with overall head of marketing (digital as well as offline) are also keen to
understand their individual functions' contribution to this growth and want to double down on
those key levers. Budget allocation of each department will be done based on their individual
functions' contribution to this growth and their ability to accelerate/ replicate it. As an analytics
lead, you have been asked to help these heads figure this out and also collaborate with the
research team on any findings that they might already have or might need to do additional
research on.
How will you go about diagnosing and understanding the levers for this growth and what are all
the factors/ hypotheses that you would consider while preparing the analysis for the heads. As a
data person what are some sanity checks and validations you will perform to make sure your
findings/ data points are accurate and do not have any biases. How will you ensure that you
factor out seasonality and short term unsustainable spikes in certain numbers and make sure the
leaders understand that they might not show the same results in future. Prepare a draft narrative
as well.
Feel free to take assumptions on numbers and business variables, the focus will be on the
approach.

B.2 Case Study: Product

In this assignment we ask you to answer four questions. You may need to experience the
app (Available on Google Play Store). You can also use this Product Walkthrough to
understand more about the business. Make sure to include all information and/or insights
that you find relevant and, of course, feel free to explain why you chose to use a certain
approach
1. You have been asked to come up with a definition of power users? At a high level, what
are some of the initiatives you can think of moving a user from early user to a power user.
2. Prepare dummy data of all the data points you would like to track to define this power
user, explain the rationale behind tracking those? How would you determine if your
definition is correct?
3. How would you increase the transacting conversion and retention rate of these power
users?
4. Pick one of your proposed initiatives in question 3 and plan an A/B test in detail as if you
are handling it over to the team to execute
