LITERATURE REVIEW ON THE EFFECT OF GIVING TOMATO JUICE ON INCREASING HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS

IN THIRD TRIMESTER PREGNANT WOMEN

The incidence of anemia or blood deficiency in pregnant women in Indonesia is still relatively high, as
much as 48.9%. The results of the Basic Health Research showed that 73.2% of women aged 15-49 years
had received blood supplement tablets containing iron-folic acid. Nevertheless, the incidence of anemia
in pregnant women still reaches 40 - 50%, it means that 5 out of 10 pregnant women in Indonesia
experience anemia (Riskesdas, 2018). Seeing the high incidence of anemia in pregnant women, one of
the alternatives that can be done to fulfill iron needs by consuming foods that contain iron and vitamin C
which functions to help the process of iron absorption. One of the fruits that contain vitamin C, iron, and
compounds beneficial for health is tomatoes.

The purpose of the research was to know how the Effect of Giving Tomato Juice on Increasing
Hemoglobin Levels in Trimester III Pregnant Women based on Literature Studies. The type of research
used is a literature study. For data collection of literature review, researchers used the keywords "the
effect of tomato juice on increasing hemoglobin levels in third trimester pregnant women" from several
research results to explore as much information as possible from the data obtained through google
scholar.

The results in this research from five journals that have been reviewed obtain the results of the effect of
giving tomato juice on increasing hemoglobin levels in third trimester pregnant women with a p-value of
0.000 < α (0.05), it means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, namely the effect of tomato juice
consumption on increasing hemoglobin levels in third trimester pregnant women. Where there is an
increase in hemoglobin levels after intervention with the giving of tomato juice from the average
hemoglobin level of 9.573 to 11.979 gr/dl.

It is expected that the results of this research can be used as a recommendation to the public health
center to increase the participation in supporting pregnant women in carrying out treatment and how to
prevent or handle the occurrence of anemia during pregnancy by increasing the mother's knowledge
about how to treat and prevent anemia by utilizing plants and other alternatives that are cheap and
easy to obtain.
