Columbiana, Ohio

History
Settled in 1802 and brought to life in 1805 by
Joshua Dixon & William Heald

With a railroad and three stores, Columbiana


was incorporated into a village in 1837, later
becoming a city in 2000

In 1900 Harvey S. Firestone (Columbiana


Native) founded Firestone Tire & Rubber in
Akron, followed by placement of Firestone
Tire Testing Centre off of Route 7

All Firestone Agricultural tires were designed


and tested by Harvey Firestone on his Farm
prior to introduction to the public in 1932

Demographics
● As of this year, Columbiana’s population consists of 6,595
people. 3,647 are females and 2,851 are males.
● The racial composition is: White 94.58%, Asian 2.26%,
Two or more races 1.59%, Other race 1.57%, Black or
African American 0.00%, Native American 0.00%, and
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander 0.00%.
● The median total age is 50.4 years old, 43.7 for males and
50.8 for females.
● The overall poverty rate is 12.50%, males at 8.83% and
females at 15.40%.

Ethnicity
With Columbiana Ohio's populations being 95% white, a little over 2% Asian and the rest of
the population being classified as other. The ethnic group of Columbiana is the majority
white with no specific cultural dominance.

Many events/festivals are hosted throughout the year in the city.


In the spring season the city has the Columbiana Wine Festival.
In the summer season Columbiana host a Fourth of July fireworks festival, Shaker Woods
festival and the Firestone festival of arts.
In the fall they host the Street Fair and Christmas in the Woods.
During the winter season there is the Joy of Christmas Holiday Light Festival

Values & Beliefs
● Columbiana has multiple churches including various religions and faiths. There is a strong
religious community in Columbiana that provide assistance to those in need through nonprofits
and volunteerism.
● Some examples of domination in Columbiana include christian, presbyterian, methodist, and
lutheran. Many faiths are locally available and helping support the community.
● Several churches in the area have youth groups and camps for their younger church members.
This provides opportunity for all ages to participate in their faith.

● The climate in Columbiana is warm and sunny
during the summer, rainy and chilly in fall and
spring, and cold and snowy in winter.
● The terrain has wooded areas and fields along
with a small town center.
● It has 535 square miles. There is more rural use
of land.
● The ownership rate is 73.4% which is higher than
the national average.
● The water for households is mostly well water,
depending on where you are located.
● The air quality is pretty good and has gotten
better reaching a 39 on the AQI scale which
determines good air quality.
● The pollutants mostly come from farms and
industry plants.
● They have 41 animal reservoirs that has dams,

● Because Columbiana is such a small community, there aren’t
Health & Social Services many health and social resources located specifically in
Columbiana.
● The couple that are in the community include Columbiana
Meals on Wheels and Whispering Pines Village Assisted Living.
● After some research, I found that there are many more
resources available close by.
○ There are multiple assistance programs located in
Salem, Youngstown, Ravenna, and Lisbon.
○ Assisted living options can be found in Niles, Salem, and
East Liverpool.
○ Children’s services are available in Boardman,
Youngstown, and Lisbon.
○ Counseling and mental health services as well as drug
and alcohol assistance programs range from
Youngstown to Salem to East Liverpool.
● These all should be relatively accessible to the community of
Columbiana because they are not far away.

Industry/Economy
● Columbiana’s unemployment rate was 5% in
September 2022 which is an ideal rate for an area.
● There are decent numbers of places of employment.
There are numerous manufacturers, distribution
centers, construction businesses, and different types of
common good stores.
● There is mostly blue collar work in this area in farming,
factories, and other types of industries.
● The median household income was around 50,000 in
2020.
● The largest industries in Columbiana County, OH are
Manufacturing (8,365 people), Health Care & Social
Assistance (8,250 people), and Retail Trade (4,365

● There are sidewalks, bike and walking trails. Most residents travel by car
but wheelchair accessible shuttles and buses are available.
● Columbiana’s community has EMS services, sanitation services, fire and
police departments. Columbiana does have a disaster plan in place.
● Overall, the crime in Columbiana is low and nonviolent making it a safe
community to live in. Columbiana is safer than 84% than other United
States cities.
● From my observation the sidewalks appeared well maintained and
accessible to handicapped citizens. The roads are well cared for and
properly managed.

Government & Leadership

● Columbiana county is overwhelmingly republican


○ They have voted republican in every Presidential election since 2000
○ In the last presidential election it was 75.5% republican to 26.7% democrat

Communication
Columbiana has great resources to keep the community in touch with
each other. For news, people can watch 21 WFMJ or read one of
several newspapers, such as The Morning Journal, The Review, and
Salem News.
One popular spot for people to gather is Firestone Park. Firestone Park
has 68 acres of land with four pavilions, three covered picnic spots,
and the Idabelle Firestone Gathering Place and Garden, which is a
pavilion named after the woman who gifted the city the land for the
park. There is a stage there for musical performances, and nearby
seating accommodates up to 200 people.
Education
● Columbiana offers public and private schools such as Heartland Christan
School and Columbiana Public School Program
● The school district graduation rate is between 90-95 percent in recent
years
● The school system is ranked in the top 10 percent of standardized testing
in the state.
● The access to higher education closest to Columbina is YSU.
● There is a public library in the community which has many different
options for books and learning programs for the community
● Overall, the community offers students everything they may need while
attending kindergarten through 12th grade, it is truly exceptional.

Recreation
● Columbiana has plenty of recreation activities in
the community such as Firestone Farms Golf
Course and Valley Golf Course
● The newly renovated Firestone Park has
beautiful tennis courts, pickleball courts,
basketball courts, a disc golf course, and several
ponds for fishing open for the public
● The park houses the community pool and the
Columbiana School’s football, baseball and
softball fields
● These are great programs for recreation because
it's something that anyone can take part in and
most are free of charge.

Wealthy setting makes for happier families, living in an area of little to no serious crime
committed

Wealthy population allows for the construction of a new plaza providing numerous
activities (Bands and Movies every friday) that are set each weekend at 7 & 14 for
families to enjoy

Residentially, Columbiana is a very uptight and well founded city with older historical
homes all the way to modern houses, apartments and condos

Activities and areas most common for resident interaction include mainstreet
Columbiana, local gyms (Mi Gym, Workout Center), Original Theater, Firestone Park,
Firestone Plaza (Movies, games, bars, winery) , Golf Courses (Firestone, Valley), Shaker
Woods, Christmas In the Woods, and lastly a brand new indoor sports complex.
Plan for Community
Our plan to improve Columbiana:
● As Columbiana’s population continues to grow more housing will need
to become available to the residents that are attempting to move to the
area
● Along with this comes the need for bigger stores and more room in the
Columbiana School System
● A need for more retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants and
entertainment may benefit to sustain the community long-term
● We believe that with as strong as this community is they will be able to
accomplish this with little issues as it seems that they are ready for this
change
