HOMEWORK #5

Imagine you sit in the Chief Scientific Advisors Group, which advises the European Commission to
inform policy making. What recommendations would you make to the Commission to prevent
incidents like the whole Xylella affair from happening in the future?
As a Chief scientific advisor, I would recommend research support to understand the problem without
jumping into quick conclusions. Encourage open and transparent communication between
policymakers, scientists, and the public. Promoting accessibility of scientific findings, policy
documents, and decision-making processes to the public would help reduce their dogmatic beliefs. It
would be also best to encourage responsible journalism and media practices that prioritize accuracy
and fact-checking.
In case such incidents spiral out of the government's control, it may be prudent to limit the
dissemination of confidential information to the public in order to mitigate the impact of the incident.
And try to solve the problem with minimum collateral damage.
