Morocco has a history of immigration and has played a role in keeping immigrants from

reaching Europe. The article "Sub-Saharan leaders in Morocco's migration industry: advocacy,

incorporation, and trafficking" examines the many roles that civic leaders and migrants from

Sub-Saharan Africa play in the migration sector of Morocco. This article relates to the research

question and the ethnographic research that was done in the Kingdom in 2018 with 4 Moroccan

activists, 39 sub-Saharan advocates, and community leaders. It relates to the research question in

that it contends that although community leaders and activists are on the front lines of fighting

for migrant rights, they are also involved in the migration industry that has grown since the

National Strategy for Immigration and Asylum (SNIA) was put into place in 2014. The

immigrants try to work in the fields of humanitarian aid or migration management, but racial

discrimination frequently prevents them from making money from these fields. To facilitate

border checkpoints for other migrants in exchange for money, immigrant leaders use their social

capital in the process.

Some of the activists and community leaders play a crucial role in Morocco's immigrants

transportation system because without them, additional sub-Saharan migrants would lack the

knowledge, contacts, and support necessary to receive aid and remain in Morocco or keep

moving to Europe. The key contribution of this article to the research questions is to describe the

various ways in which Morocco tries to prevent most African immigrants from reaching Europe.

The article also describes the repercussions most immigrants would face if they were arrested at

the border checkpoints. The article also tries to inform the Moroccan administrators on how most

officers collude with immigrants at some point to get their access to Europe.
