Tutorial 6: Hypothesis for Two Populations

1. The weekly wage amounts, in RM of the random sample of 15 employees who do

have an overtime payment are given in the following table.

70 166 140 151 133

200 200 118 132 125
165 137 210 137 140

The weekly wages of the sample of 75 employees who do not have an overtime
payment have a mean of 140. The population standard deviations were known to
be 34 and 36 for the first and the second set of wages respectively. At the 5%
level of significance, is there evidence that the weekly wage of employees who
have overtime is earning more than those who don’t have overtime?

2. Two random samples of 20 students were drawn independently from two normal
populations. The populations are distributed with equal variances. The following
statistics regarding their scores in a final exam were obtained: , ,
, and . Test at the 5% significance level to determine whether we
can infer that the two population means differ.

3. A recruitment agency wants to investigate whether managers with Master of

Business Administration (MBA) degree in Malaysia receive better pay than those
managers without the degree. A random sample of 38 managers with MBA
degree showed that they are paid with an average of RM8245 per month. Another
random sample of 42 managers without a MBA degree showed that their mean
wage is RM7899 per month. If the population standard deviation of the monthly
wage of managers with and without a MBA degree is RM897 and RM1135
respectively, can we conclude that managers with a MBA degree are better paid
than those managers without the degree at 1% significance level?

4. During the Business and Management Club re-election campaign, out of the
random sample of 80 male and 85 female members interviewed, 64% of the male
members and 62% of the female members favour a particular candidate. Test at
the 5% significance level whether the proportions of all male and all female
members who favour the candidate are different.

5. A maker of toothpaste is interested in testing whether the proportion of adults

(over age 18) who use their toothpaste and have no cavities within a six-month
period is any different than the proportion of children (18 and under) who use the
toothpaste and have no cavities within a six-month period. To test this, they have
selected a sample of adults and a sample of children randomly from the
population of those customers who use their tooth paste. The following results
were observed.
Adults Children
Sample Size 100 200
Number with 0 cavities 83 165

Based on these sample data and using a significance level of 0.05, what
conclusion should be reached?
