Causes of Increase in Road Accidents
1. Terms of Reference
The Executive Director of the Ministry of Transport requested, in a staff meeting, a report on the
reasons for the increase in road accidents in Somalia. This report will be delivered on October
20, 2014.
2 .Background
Traffic accidents constitute a major health and development crisis and are predicted to increase if
not addressed adequately. Every year, according to the statistics, 1.3 million people are known to
die in auto collisions around the world. Almost 3,500 individual kick the bucket on the world’s
streets consistently. A huge number of individuals are harmed to cripple each year. Youngsters,
people on foot, cyclists and the elderly are among the most defenseless of street clients. If current
trends continue, traffic accidents are anticipated to wind up distinctly the fifth driving reason for
death by 2030. Currently it is in ninth place (Davao 2011)

3. The Proceedings
250 respondents were interviewed about the reasons for the increase in road accidents in
Somalia.

4. Findings
100 drivers said:

The causes of this accident are because:

4.1 Bad roads
Negligent drivers aren’t the only parties that cause car accident. Each year, an undetermined
numbers of car accidents are caused by poor and dangerous roadway conditions. Even the best
and most defensive drivers can be caught off – guard by sudden problem in the road, losing
control of their vehicle and crashing. When the bad condition of a road, street, or highway causes
an accident which is to blame for the resulting injuries and damages?

Figure 1 Bad Road

6
4.2 Narrow Roads
Narrow roads can be especially dangerous when large vehicles are using them as throughways.
Narrow roads caused death traps as dozens of fatal accidents occur here every day. As a narrow
road one of the main danger that large vehicle present is when it attempts to turn. Overpasses and
bridges whether they are one way or bidirectional, they often have little or no shoulder space.
Height can be also concern for large vehicles, as older bridges and underpasses might have a
lower clearance level.

Figure 2 Narrow Road

✓ Roads over used and have not been repaired since the colonial days

4.3 Same roads used for both big and small cars.

▪ Can cause traffic conjunctions

▪ Can cause road distraction (because of weight).
▪ Causes accident

7
Figure 3 Big &Small cars at same roads

3.1 120 passengers said:

• Cars are overloaded.
Overloading a car isn’t a trivial matter, as a car that’s carrying more weight than it was
designed to carry can be a serious safety hazard to yourself and other road users.

Figure 4 Overloaded

8
• Drivers chew QAT while driving.
It’s hard to concentrate two things at same time and chewing Qat stimulates driver’s hormones
that’s why chewing Qat effects to the road accidents.

Figure 5 Chewing QAT

• Reckless driving example (switching lanes too quickly, blatantly disregarding the safety
or property of others). The basic definition of reckless driving is driving that shows
irreverence for or indifference to the safety or property of others. In some states, the
physical and/or mental state of the driver is also a determining factor.
• Distracted driving example (when driver is texting, talking on phone reading while
driving, the brain is switching between tasks and unable to consistently focus on what’s
ahead).
Table 1 Collected Information

➢ Drivers using drugs or chewing QAT 83%

➢ Drivers who speed excessively 70%

➢ Distracted drivers 65%

➢ Overloaded car 88%

9
Table 2 Distracted Driving

3.2 30 traffic Police (Officers) said:

• No Street lights to aid drivers at night.
At night, when driving on the highway, they can only see the dark black surrounding them.
Except for the headlights and reflective sign on the road, basically no other lights can be seen.

10
Figure 6 No straight light

• Poor traffic signs and faded.

Those green highway signs on interstates increasingly have problems. Older signs are almost
invisible at night and it's creating issues for drivers and headaches for state transportation
managers.

11
Figure 7 Traffic

• Over speeding.
Over speeding can lead to road accidents, and road accidents can lead to serious injuries and
sometimes loss of lives. This tends to have many effects on the nation and on the lives of people
and families as well.

12
Figure 8 Over Speed

• Some cars on the HARGEISA roads DMCs (Dangerous Mechanical Conditions) e.g.
have faulty brakes, bald tires, faulty headlights and etc.

Figure 9 DMC

• We paid less salary and our morale is low to contain the problem.

13
Drivers should be given enough money or salary to increase their morale and the safety of roads .

4 Conclusion
All of these things happen because:
• There is not enough budget to repair these roads and install lighting poles
• It is not appreciated of traffic police officers and they are not paid enough to do their jobs
properly
• No street lights
• Exceeded speed
• Over loaded the cars

5 Recommendations
• Instead of spending millions on QAT, this money should be used to renovate roads
• Salary supply for traffic police officers.
• Make sure to install lighting poles
• Installing radar on the roads and punishing drivers who drive faster than the speed limit
• Limit passengers in the car
