Web Quest – ELAR

5th Grade!
Let’s talk about our state flags!
Introduction: There are 50 states in the United States, The United States is identified by a
beautiful flag. However, did you know that our states have a flag that represents them?
Task: Students will be presented with a state flag at random and will need to use technology to
research interesting facts about the state. The students will use what they researched to create a
small story about their state. The student will then create a mind map describing their thought
process while creating their storybook. Students will then finish reading their stories to the class.
Process:
1. Students will receive a random state flag and must research what state it is and 5 facts
about it.
2. The student will create a short storybook using my storybook.com and use their research
to create a story appropriate to the state.
3. The students will create a mind map developing their ideas about their thought processes
when creating the storybook.
4. The students will finish reading their storybook to the class.
Evaluation:
1. 4/5 true facts on the storybook.
2. Spelling of storybook with 85% accuracy
3. Completion of the mind map.
Conclusion:
The students will learn that different flags exist in our states, and the students will understand
that even living in the same country many states have different habits and cultures. Students will
learn how different and similar some of the states can be by reading their stories and listening to
their peers present their stories. The mind map would illustrate if the students enjoyed the
assignment and their thinking process throughout it.
