THE ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF FOUNDATIONS ON

SLOPES

The region above the failure surface of the shallow strip foundation is
sectioned into a central elastic zone A B C, a radial shear zone D C A,
and the mixed shear zone ADEF. The bearing capacity of a foundation
on material completely submerged below a stationary water table is
given by an equation. If the water percolates through the soil, this
requires a flow network analysis to establish the neutral stresses at the
failure surface, meanwhile the bearing capacity after the rapid
reduction of the water table of a completely submerged foundation can
be estimate from equation 2 using a reduced angle of internal friction.
The influence of groundwater conditions on the bearing capacity of
foundations at the top of a slope can be taken into account as
mentioned above for foundations on the face of a slope. The effect of a
stress crack on the bearing capacity at the top of a slope of purely
cohesive material can be estimated, with a good approximation, from
Equation 4 using reduced cohesion. In cohesive material with little or
no shear angle, the bearing capacity of a foundation may be limited by
the stability of the entire slope with a slip surface intersecting the toe or
bottom of the slope.
