Preventive Measures Reflection

Kyann Braden

As we all know, as dental hygienists, we want to help educate our patients on oral health along

with using preventive measures to keep our patients healthy. Throughout dental hygiene school we have

learned about some of the best preventive measures such as patient education, fluoride, sealants, etc. In

my portfolio you can see that I have attached a sealant proficiency and daily grade sheet, a fluoride

proficiency, a special needs research paper, and a journal article related to working with patients who

refuse to floss.

In my research paper I talk about epilepsy and the effects on the oral cavity. I go into talking

about appointment modifications that may be needed along with what to do in an emergency to help make

the situation as safe as possible.

Growing up in a small town where nobody really went to the dentist until they were five, I never

really was taught about oral health until college. Educating patients and individualizing their home

instructions is one of my favorite parts in hygiene school. Being able to teach each patient something new

to help them with their oral health is something I find joy in.
