Exploration on Whitman’s Democracy through Literature

Walt Whitman is regarded as one of the greatest authors in the 19th century. His works

pay homage to the aspirations of man during the industrialization era and are heavily oriented on

democracy. To broaden the scope of his writing, he freely employed slang and terms from other

languages to personify a democratic voice who responds in an inclusive manner.

Whitman's vocabulary and diction were so distinctive that he incorporated foreign words

into his works and created new terminology. His experimentation with the use of these foreign

concepts alongside his use of the English language as a means of conveying a magnificent

message of democracy included his assurance in rejecting meter, rhyme, and conventional poetic

diction in his prose poetry. In his opinion, all people are created equal, including men and

women, and all occupations are noble.

How people actually speak was taken into account in his writings, which led to a low

register diction and a grammar that shunned hierarchical devices like subordinate clauses.

Whitman thought that the poet would be better able to depict the common speech and

comprehension patterns required for a functioning democratic public realm using the plain style.

He believes that authors who use conversational slang and local dialects demonstrate a

dedication to limitless freedom by bridging traditional lines of power and class because he

viewed democracy as a way of life, not merely a political system. He believed that democracy

should affect all aspects of life, not just politics, by influencing the way we speak, think, work,

battle, and even create art.

Whitman had a generally upbeat outlook on the typical person and thought that

democratic democracy, with all of its possibilities, would eventually work itself out and promote

personal happiness. Through the pursuit of original and symbolic literary studies, he was able to

uphold his beliefs in his works and develop a novel form of poetry.
