It was the already distant year 1938 and, logically, it was other times.

Nations were in full


development and the great minds of the time conceived new ideas that would revolutionize the
future of the world in all sectors.

One of the most important (and unknown) inventors of the time was Béla Barényi, an Austro-
Hungarian engineer credited with inventing the original design of the Volkswagen Beetle in 1925,
initially called the Volkswagen Type 1.

This was his response to the desire of the German government, which needed a Volkswagen
(literally “people's car”) affordable and practical enough that ordinary people could afford it. And
wow he got it.

Its iconic design would remain immortalized for eternity: two doors, flared wheel arches, a large
bonnet all the way to the front bumper, circular headlights, rounded shapes… A timeless image
that continues to be attractive today

Its contained price in full economic recovery after the Second World War made the VW Beetle a
true best seller. So much so that it was marketed on a large scale in Europe until 1978, when it
passed the baton to the Volkswagen Golf.

However, on the other side of the pond the panorama was quite different, since it was a model
quite far from the tastes of the Americans, who have always preferred large and powerful
vehicles.

However, starting in the 1960s, the VW Type 1 became an icon of the hippie movement, which
was against indiscriminate consumerism. Thus, this affordable model was the ideal way to move
without displaying unnecessary luxuries.
In fact, the excellent performance and low cost of the Volkswagen Beetle made it the ideal car for
developing countries. So much so that it was not until 2003 when the last unit, number
21,529,464, left the brand's factory in Mexico.

¿Futuro Volkswagen Beetle eléctrico?

Since the European firm stopped manufacturing the latest generation in 2019, there has been a lot
of talk about a possible electric Volkswagen Beetle, especially thanks to the boost that the MEB
modular platform, creator of the ID family models, has had.

Its design is a total unknown, but it could maintain its characteristic rounded silhouette with
futuristic details with aerodynamic-looking wheels and 100% digital instrumentation. Be that as it
may, the Volkswagen Beetle is more alive than ever.
