Indigenous people’s relationship with their traditional lands and territories is known to be part of their identities.

This was a spiritual belief and it is

something that is deeply rooted in their culture and history. The indigenous people are believed to have an intimate connection to the land, basically
who they are is tied to the land itself.

For Aboriginal people the relationship is much deeper. Palyku woman Ambelin Kwaymullina explains:

"For Aboriginal peoples, country is much more than a place. Rock, tree, river, hill, animal, human – all were formed of the same substance by
the Ancestors who continue to live in land, water, sky. Country is filled with relations speaking language and following Law, no matter whether
the shape of that relation is human, rock, crow, wattle. Country is loved, needed, and cared for, and country loves, needs, and cares for her
peoples in turn. Country is family, culture, identity. Country is self."

They know where to find sources of water and the effects of seasons on plants and animals. For example:

1. PLANTING
2. HUNTING
3. GATHERING
4. FISHING

From the time they were very young, Indigenous peoples were taught to respect their local environment. They learned to maintain the land to
ensure that the resources would continue to be available for generations to come. They believed that in order to do that, they could take or use
only what was needed and that they should not waste anything. They would also stay in an area for only a certain time to make sure they did not
overhunt, overfish, or overharvest the area. They wanted to make sure that there would be a steady supply of food. This is known as
sustainability. It was the reason Indigenous cultures were able to survive for so long.
