Source B: An excerpt from a speech given by Sukarno, President of Indonesia, during the Bandung
Conference.

As I survey this hall and the guests gathered here, my heart is filled with emotion. This is the first
intercontinental conference of coloured (non-White) peoples in the history of mankind!

… the forerunner of this our great gathering … the Bogor Conference in December 1954 showed that the
road ahead was clear for Asian-African solidarity, and the Conference to which I have the honour of
welcoming you today is the realization of that solidarity. …

You have not gathered together in a world of peace and unity and cooperation. There is a huge gulf
between nations and groups of nations. …

1. According to Source A, identify ONE similarity of the participating countries in the Bandung
Conference and the founding countries of the Non-Aligned Movement.

2. If you were the leader of a member state of the Non-Aligned Movement in the 1960s, what would you
say to convince more newly independent countries to join the Movement? Explain your answer with
reference to Sources A and B, and using your own knowledge.

Tips: Thinking steps

Step 1: Get into the role
What era / period do I live? What is my role?
1960s (Cold War period); Leader of a member state of the Non-Aligned Movement
Step 2: Study the two Sources
What were the main features of the international political landscape at that time?
What challenges did the newly independent countries face after gaining independence?
