CHAPTER XXXV: The Comment

Setting: San Diego

Characters: Townspeople, Don Felipo, Kapitana Maria
Summary
News spreads about Ibarra and Friar Damaso’s encounter. There are even rumors claiming that the friar
is already dead. There are those who praise Ibarra, like Don Felipo and those who find mistake in
Ibarra's lack of prudence. Most of the mothers talk among themselves, assured that Ibarra's soul is
surely condemned to burn in hell after what he did to a man of God. There are other women, too, who
are on his side like Kapitana Maria who claims that if her two sons were in Ibarra's shoes, she wouldn't
be ashamed of it. According to her, it is a rare and honorable occurrence when a son defends the name
of his parents, even if they are already dead. Most of the townspeople think that not only will Ibarra be
excommunicated; he is also bound to be considered a filibuster. Others said that the building of the
school house will be canceled since he is labeled as a filibuster by the Friar.

The events of the luncheon became the talk of the entire town of San Diego. Most of them sided with
Padre Damaso because if Ibarra had kept calm, this would not have happened.
Only Captain Martin understood Ibarra's actions because no one could resist if the father was insulted.
Don Filipo assumed that Ibarra was waiting for him to help the people in gratitude for the good he and
his father had done. Meanwhile, the town captain insisted that there was nothing they could do because
the friars were always right.
According to Don Filipo, this happens because the people are not united and divided while the friars and
the rich are united.
The old women in the town were afraid because if they did not side with Padre Damaso they might end
up in hell.
Captain Maria was pleased with the young man's defense of his father. The farmers suddenly lost hope
because the school might not continue. When that happens, their children may not be able to finish
school.
There are rumors that the construction of the church may not continue because the friar called Ibarra a
filibuster. Farmers do not understand the meaning of Pilibustero.

Isyung panlipunan
In this chapter, the rapid spread of false news or rumors about the incident between Padre Damaso and
Crisostomo Ibarra is shown. In such cases, remorse and partisanship emerge. This is a real disease of
society, whenever there are two groups or individuals who are enemies usually blame and take sides.
There are also those who prefer to be fair or impartial. And most of all, there is also someone who turns
a blind eye and turns a deaf ear to what is happening around him so as not to sympathize. In the chapter
it can be read that there are those who side with Ibarra and there are also those who believe that Father
Damaso's actions were more reasonable. One of those who gave his opinion was captain Martin. In his
statement he tried to be fair. He said that the behavior shown by Ibarra was only right to give justice to
the father but he also said that it was not possible for Ibarra to kill Father Damaso because of his love for
Maria Clara. Don Filipo, on the other hand, chose to be blind to the truth and just accept that the friars
are always right
