Dangerous Shopping by Kate Wallis has to be one of the
most thought-provoking books that I have ever read.

It is set in modern urban Britain and it tells the story

through the eyes of a courageous heroine, Jane.

One day as Jane is making her daily trip to the

supermarket to buy her groceries, there is a robbery. In
the confusion, the robbers kidnap Jane as she is standing
at the checking counter. While Jane is imprisoned, she
recounts her ordeal in graphic and painful detail. There are
several incidents in the novel where Jane’s ability to cope
when she is threatened is remarkable.

The story makes me think how your ordinary life can be

changed in one incident. It is also inspiring for me as it
makes me realise how our inner strength can help us cope
with any disaster.

The book is skillfully written and Kate’s style is direct and

witty. She is able to show her characters to be strong and
convincing. The plot is very unpredictable and it is a real
page-turner. If you like to read a tense book this is the one
for you as you will find it hard to put down.

Dangerous Shopping by Kate Wallis has to be one of the

Varjak Paw is a pampered pet cat who knows there's more to life. His family tease
him and don't understand his adventurous spirit. He is soon forced to venture
beyond the garden wall to save his family from the mysterious and dangerous
'gentleman' and his two evil hench-cats.

Schoolgirl China Lee forms a firm friendship with an intriguing old man,
named Mr Jupiter, who has a fascinating array of futuristic gadgets. Their
meeting is the start of an action-packed adventure to save the Earth
from destruction.

The characters are larger than life and you can't wait to see how they will
react. Mr Jupiter is as mysterious as the planet he is named after and
you keep wondering just who, or what, he is - so much so that you have
to carry on reading. It definitely deserves its shortlist for the Whitbread
book award.

An amazing book. Quite dark in places, but wonderful to read and to

understand! It keeps you gripped from the first page to the last.

The second book in the Bartimaeus trilogy. Set in an alternate universe,

the UK is run by magicians who have replaced politicians in government.
Something is attacking the country and 14-year-old John Mandrake (also
called Nathaniel), the assistant to one of the magicians, is given the job
of finding out what is behind it. Is it the resistance or something much
nastier?
