QUESTIONS
1. (30p) Free vibration of a spring mass damper system is recorded
experimentally as shown in the figure. Initial conditions given to the
system is x  0   15 and x  0   0 at time t  0 ( x1  15, t1  0 ). The
amplitude measured three cycles later from the initial condition is x4  1
at time t4  3 seconds.
a) (5p) Determine the damping ratio  .
b) (10p) Obtain the equation of motion for the system.
c) (10p) Find the amplitude two cycles later from the initial condition.
d) (5p) Find the estimate of response time ts
2. (30p) Consider the mechanical system shown in the figure. The output of the system is the
displacement x of the mass m. The input to the system is the displacement p(t). k is the spring
constant and b is the viscous friction coefficient. Assume that m=1 kg, b=20 Ns/m, k=100 N/m
and the initial conditions are zero.
a) (10p) Derive a state-space representation of the system (Obtain state and output equations).
Also, specify the state variables.
b) (10p) Obtain the state transition matrix or matrix exponential for this system (   t   e At ).

c) (10p) Obtain the analytical solution for unit step response of the system in state-space form.

3. (25p) Transfer function of a machine resting on shock mounts is G  s   2
.

Consider a force input to this system arise from rotating unbalance. Assume that the rotor is rotating at a constant speed 1
rad/s and that the 0.1 kg unbalanced mass is located a distance 0.1 m from the center of rotation.
a) (15p) Find the steady-state output of the system.
b) (10p) Find the transmissibility, assuming that the amplitude of force transmitted to the foundation from the machine is
0.0128 N. Does the isolator reduce or increase the vibrations transmitted to the foundation?
4. (15p) Figure shows a machine with a dynamic vibration absorber above. Rigid
machine body is connected to the foundation by two springs. Dynamic vibration
absorber which is in the form of a spring-mass system (ma, ka) is attached to the
machine. Suppose that the operating frequency  is too close to the undamped natural
frequency n of the machine. If M=750 kg, k1=k2=50 N/m, ka=10 N/m and it is known
that the force transmitted to the foundation is zero, what is the mass ma of the dynamic
vibration absorber?
