Welcome Address

Let me start with a famous quote by Louis Pasteur –

“Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the
torch which illuminates the world.”

Good morning to one and all. It is with great pleasure and privilege that I take this
opportunity to welcome you all to this National Conference on “Harnessing biology for
sustainability”.
"In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
First and foremost, I acknowledge the grace of God and his irrevocable support. I with
immense respect take this opportunity to welcome our Secretary Rev. Sr. Dr. Ruby
Alangara Mary, who is a constant support and advice we always value. I also welcome our
Principal Rev. Sr. Dr. Mary Fabiola, who always stands tall and strong as our pillar of
support, our Vice Principal Rev. Sr. Dr. Regina Mary, whose words of advice we are very
grateful for. I also welcome the IQAC coordinator and Head of the Department of Zoology,
Dr.Pauline Vasanthi Joseph for being the driving force all these years. I also welcome the
Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Folentia Kamal, Dean of Academics Dr. U. Mary, for being a
part in all our endeavours.
The speakers of this national conference are uniquely placed in panel to discuss &
highlight the key points, trends and future of science and its sustainability. One such ardent
and ambitious speaker is Dr. Varadharajan Sundaramoorthy, Scientist-NCBS (Tata Institute
of Fundamental Research) Bengaluru, Karnataka. Sir has completed his PhD from Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has also completed his Post-Doctoral fellowship from the
University of Basel, Switzerland and Max-Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and
Genetics, Dresden, Germany. He is an experimental biologist with specialization in cell
biology of host-pathogen interactions and interaction of fundamental host trafficking
pathways. Sir has an exemplary research experience of over 5 years in drug discovery. He is
also highly proficient in assay development, high content screening platforms and
quantitative image analysis. His major areas of research expertise are Tuberculosis and
Malaria. To name some of the specific projects sir has worked with respect to his field of
expertise are:
a) Modulation of host endocytosis pathways during mycobacterial infection

b) Role of host endocytosis and autophagy during Plasmodium liver stage development
c) Assay development for P. vivax liver stage malaria

Sir has wide academic and research exposure and has also published research articles
in various reputed journals. He is presently conducting research at NCBS, Bangalore with
funding from renowned funding institutes namely NCBS core funds, DBT (Ramalingaswamy
fellowship), Max Planck Society and DST (Max Planck partner group) and Medicines for
Malaria Venture (MMV). He has also been awarded with the “Excellence in research prize
for the year 2008 by Pfizer in Infection Biology”.

We are indeed humbled and honoured by your kind gesture of consenting to be the
chief guest. Thank you sir. Finally, I wish to welcome all the students who with all vigour
