“Water crisis in Baja Califonia”

Baja California has faced a severe water shortage problem for decades, mainly in the cities of Tecate,
Tijuana, Rosarito and Ensenada, therefore the only city that is not experiencing water shortages is the capital,
Mexicali. Families living in the mountainous areas of the coastal cities are used to storing water in 200 liter
"water buckets" or carrying water with "palanca" from the nearest public tap. The water problem in these cities
is twofold, because on the one hand there is not enough water to meet the demand, on the other hand they
have to deal with a lousy distribution system that has existed for decades.

However, in recent years, the water shortage has become a crisis because of the lack of rain and snow in the
mountains of the United States, which has caused the Colorado River to drop, causing it to begin to reduce its
water supply to our country via Colorado during the year; For the rest of 2023 and 2024, the water crisis will
continue to worsen gradually.

There is a general water crisis in Baja California, but the situation is the same in northern Mexico and the
problem has existed since 1999 due to a prolonged drought. Researcher Alfonso Cortez Lara, from the
Department of Urban and Environmental Studies (El Colef) of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, points out that
the area has been affected. He said that there will be a drop in the cubic meters of water supply; there could
be a lack of 128 million cubic meters for next year. In the face of a crisis, the doctor offers a range of
proposals, from institutional to civilian. As a first example, he cites the Water Use Law that is being developed
at the national level. In this sense, he highlights Tijuana's potential as a city that can benefit from the use of
wastewater, with only about 6 percent of existing wastewater being treated and used, this means less water
stress. In the social sector, the expert speaks of the need for an intensive and effective campaign to inform
people about the use of water for civilian use, as there is no culture of water saving and it is necessary to
explain to people about the labor required for a simple opening.
