RESEARCH TITLE
Working Scholars: Life as a Worker and
an Academic Performer

PRINCIPLE OF PURPOSE
The purpose of the study is to discuss the
possible reasons of student assistants’ poor
academic performance.
DESIGN
The study utilized Qualitative Research
design which best fits the analysis for the
purpose of the study. Since the researchers
aim to interact with the participants in an in-
depth understanding, the researchers
needed to sought for qualitative methods
through questionnaire, focused group
discussion, and interview among student
assistants on their poor academic
performance, which establishes
descriptive research of a qualitative
research design.
SAMPLE
The population of the study were 289
Student Assistants from a university in
Cagayan de Oro City, whilst 35 are
terminated as a policy-procedure of Student
remarks. Proceeding with the research
participation, the researchers select only 5
Student Assistants to participate and
represent as the sample of the study.
METHODS
The methods utilized by the researchers of
the study were through selecting 5
respondents who answered the research
questions. Followed by a Focused Group
Discussion answering six in-depth
questions, and finally through an interview
answering two main issues on (1) Handling
of tasks in both academic and work
assigned areas, and (2) Conflict toward the
personnel.
INSTRUMENT
The instruments utilized by the researchers
of the study were through a research
questionnaire, followed by in-depth
questions from a Focused Group
Discussion, and interview.
FINDINGS
A study found on Philippine E-Journals
states that one of the financial constraints
causing students to work while studying is
not having enough allowance to support and
sustain their needs, specifying that financial
stability is necessary for student assistants
to continue in their education. It is also
stated that students apply for student
assistant to be able to proceed on colleges
with free tuition fees. However, other
a expenses still weigh students because
those that are not covered by the
scholarship such as books and uniform are
not easily affordable for these students

Working Students A Phenomenological
Study

PRINCIPLE OF PURPOSE
The purpose of the study understand the
coping of working students amidst struggles
and difficulties, and to seek significant
differences between working and non-
working students. Finally, to explore the
motivations of students in choosing to work.
DESIGN
The research utilized qualitative research
design using phenomenology to elaborate
on lived experiences among their target
participants and understand the variables in
the phenomenon of the study. Moreover,
the design used by the researchers,
specifically qualitative phenomenology is
aimed at comprehending meanings and
intentions of everyday life among working
students.
SAMPLE
The sampling method used in the study is
the Snowball sampling technique. Since the
researchers aim for a non-random sample,
they opt for the said sampling technique
fitting to the characteristics of a participant
being looked for in the study. However, the
researchers were still able to select among
all their participants whose responses made
relevant to the study. A sample drawn was a
number of 5 Senior High School students
from the University of Immaculate
Conception.
METHODS
The method of the study is a face-to-face
semi-structured interview. This best fits the
study because the researchers aim to
consider nonverbal communication among
the researchers and their participants.
Moreover, transcription and unbiased
judgments were carefully placed by the
researchers for efficient data processing
using thematic analysis.
INSTRUMENT
The instrument used in the study is a
questionnaire made by the researchers of
the study, that was approved by an expert
for validity purposes. These questions are
used in an interview for a phenomenological
qualitative research approach.
FINDINGS
A local study by Abenoja et al., 2019 found
that financial support is one of the
motivations of students to work while
studying. The researchers agree with their
literature that finances put pressure on
students, and that it has always been a
concern in pursuing studies. Moreover, the
researchers mentioned the Commission on
Higher Education’s statement that there is a
financial crisis in the country, which pushes
the students to be working students. In the
same study, it can be found to have
remarkable responses on working students’
perspectives on choosing to work such as to
be financially independent, for an additional
source of income, to free their parents from
financial burdens, for career growth and
experience, and to improve one’s quality of
life.
