A Brief History

Although techniques similar to beatboxing

have been around since the 19th century,
beatboxing as we know it today originated
from the mimicking of electronic drum
machines using only the human voice. The
term 'Beatbox' was used to describe some
drum machines since the 1970's. In 1980,
the Roland TR-808 (pictured on the right)
was released and sounds from this
machine were used and recorded in many
popular Hip-Hop and Dance tracks.
Beatbox pioneers began mimicking the
sounds of the TR-808 in particular using
only their mouths and so from the term
'beatbox' came the term the 'human
beatbox' or 'human beatboxer' meaning a
human that can create the sounds of
the drum machine using only their mouth.

"TECHNIQUE IS THE KEY. LEARNING THE WRONG TECHNIQUE LEADS TO
LESSER RESULTS"

When we beatbox, we are putting together various

sounds in a particular order. We call these 'Beat
              Key
Patterns'. Writing down your own beat patterns is a
great way to explore the many different types of beats

there are and to help you keep improving as a
beatboxer.
Ts = Hi Hat
On the right, you will see a simple key for the basic

sounds used in the beat patterns.  tktk = fill
Below you will see the beat patterns used in the
Complete Online Beatboxing Course.

Practice these and then It's time to write your own!

Let's get creative and adventurous with our music and
our beatboxing!

your beat patterns
The next few pages in this handbook are for you to create and write down your own or your favourite
beat patterns. When you have mastered one pattern, try to do it slower or faster and see how it changes
the beat and the energy of the beat. If you struggle with timing, download a metronome app and
practice with the metronome. Keep pushing yourself to try more complex beat patterns but take it
easy.. give your muscles the chance to relax and drink plenty of water.

Remember: Many beat patterns can be performed in various ways and styles. For
example, the beat pattern for a simple Hip Hop beat (B Pf B B B Pf) can easily become
a Drum & Bass beat if you perform it faster.

My journey
"GIVE SOMEONE A FISH AND THEY WILL EAT FOR A DAY. TEACH THEM HOW
TO FISH AND THEY WILL EAT FOREVER"
My earliest calling towards creating music happened when I was 4 years old, like many kids, I was
drawn to music. I used to write little 2 line poems and loved the idea of rhymes. My love for
writing rhymes continued throughout my childhood and it was when I was 11 years old that I
wrote my first full rap verse. It then became my thing to write one verse every day and I started to
fill up these blue folders full of lyrics (a lot of them written on scraps of paper, some on the back
of bus tickets). It wasn't long before I realised that I was not only writing the lyrics but I was
hearing the whole soundtrack in my head. It's still funny to me that when I started 'beatboxing', I
didn't know anything about it, the internet didn't exist and it was just something that I did. The
first time I saw anyone do anything like beatboxing was Michael Winslow in the film 'Police
Academy'. When I saw that, my world opened up and I started to put together some pretty
impressive beats and sound effects.

Although I had been on stage before, performing as a singer / rapper, I was 17 when I had my first
performance as a beatboxer. I remember working out and practicing my routine many times over,
I continued my career as a professional beatboxer (as well as a singer / songwriter and teacher).

Between 2011-2015 I toured the with my beatboxing skills and as a singer before I laid down some
roots to set up School Of Beatbox to help bring the teachings of this amazing art-form to the
world!

But that's not all that School Of Beatbox is about. 10% of all our profits goes towards supporting
incredible outreach projects that bring inspiration and change to people lives. Being a member
of School Of Beatbox means that you are also supporting these great projects. Find more info on

moving forwards
"THE FUTURE IS OURS"

Enjoy the beatbox journey and make it your own! Think outside the box! Try collaborating
with other beatboxers, vocalists, musicians, dancers, artists, people! Inspire people with
your art. If you're not ready to share it yet, keep practicing until you feel ready.

If you're finding a technique or sound very difficult, remember to slow it down. Break the
beat pattern up in to smaller sections if you need to. You can do it! Some things will take a
little more time than others.
