The Institute of

W Mathematics is happy to
welcome all of you, albeit
only virtually this time.

E More than a year after our

first lockdown, our
faculty and staff have
L become accustomed to
doing many things

C
remotely. Perhaps so have
you. And so we soldier on,
mindful of the limitations

O of virtual classrooms, yet

also conscious of
need to find our bearings
the

M in this difficult time.

Our Institute is the largest not only in Diliman but in

E the whole UP System, catering not only to science and

engineering majors but to all University students. We play a
leading role in the country’s mathematics community, we
nurture researchers in various areas of pure and applied
mathematics, and we equip our graduates with the requisite
know-how to meet the demands of data-driven industries.

M Members of our faculty have been cited not only as excellent

researchers but also outstanding educators.

E We hope that during your stay at our Institute, you will

experience the many flavors of mathematics, and hopefully,
too, you’ll find your mathematical home base. Nothing can
S make us happier as educators than seeing our students
discover for themselves the joy of doing mathematics.

S We look forward to the time when we can welcome you

in person to our Institute. For now, please take care of

A
yourselves and your loved ones.

ABOUT THE
INSTITUTE
Shortly after the College of Liberal Arts was founded on June 3,
1910, one of the independent units created for instruction was the
Department of Mathematics.
The Department of Mathematics later was under the College of
Arts and Sciences (CAS) until in 1983, when the CAS split to the
College of Science (CS), the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) and
the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP).
These three main objectives have persisted through
the year to this day and have aligned the functions of
the Department into three main categories:
General education mathematics
Mathematics as an academic discipline to be
developed
Service mathematics courses 2
ABOUT THE
INSTITUTE
The transformation was based on the following objectives:

1. To adopt the nomenclature and basic organizational

structure consistent with all degree-granting units of the
College of Science;
2. To formalize within the Institute of Mathematics the
reorganization of the faculty into academic groups. This
structure has proved to be very effective in enhancing the
instructional and research programs of existing units; and
3. To emphasize a shared vision and identity among all units
of the College. More than just and administrative change or
a change in name, the transformation affirms the
mathematics faculty’s commitment to the College’s vision,
mission and goals.
At present, the Institute of Mathematics is the
leading institution for mathematics research and
education in the Philippines. Since 1998, it has
been recognized by the Philippine Commission
on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence. It
is home to the country’s best and more
promising researchers in mathematics.

CRS and UVLê
The Computerized Registration System (CRS) is utilized in
accessing records online. It is mainly used for pre-
enlistment, registration, change of matriculation, dropping
subject/s, viewing of grades, and many more. It also displays
the important announcements, registration and eligibility
status, pre-enlistment and registration priority, and
scholarship information. For the new freshman who does
not have UP mail yet, you may use your student number in
your confirmation letter as your
username and the temporary
code that is given after
confirming your slot as your
password to have access to CRS.
To see the full features of CRS,
log in to crs.upd.edu.ph using
your Dilnet or UP mail account.

University Virtual Learning Environment (UVLê) is a

learning management system (LMS) that allows instructors
to create online spaces for their classes. Just like other
online classrooms, it is used for posting class
announcements, forums, resources, and links, submitting
homework and exams, and
other features. Take note that
not all instructors use UVLê.
To access UVLê, you may log
in to uvle.upd.edu.ph using
your Dilnet or UP Mail
account.

Frequently Asked
Questions
BS Mathematics Curriculum
If I took Calculus in SHS, even if I was not
1
in STEM, do I still need to take Math 20?
No. However, you must have certification that
you have finished this course/subject. Scanned
copy of your Form 137 is enough and email it to
your adviser.

2 Are we guaranteed math units per sem?

There is a possibility that you can not have math

units after pre-enlistment but at some point,
may it be through regular enlisting, waitlisting
or pre-rog, you will get those. We cannot
guarantee other subjects however.

Paano po ang AFR (Advanced Freshie

3
Registration)?
As of August 9, 2021, there is still no formal
announcement from the OUR but there is a high
probability that there will be the advanced
enlistment on CRS and all you have to do is
enlist on a block and hopefully it will be
granted to you.
27
Frequently Asked
Questions
BS Mathematics Curriculum
4 Are we required to follow the curriculum?

For the GEs, no. You may take them anytime.

However, the majors should be taken in order
according to their prerequisites.

Do the instructors require us to attend

5
synchronous classes?
This depends on the instructor. However,
synchronous classes are typically not required.

Can we take subjects in advance, given

6
that we are finished with the prerequisites?
You may, but it must have the approval of your
program adviser.

What is the minimum number of units

7
required to take in a semester?
Currently, the minimum is 12 units, but in a
face-to-face setting, the required is at least 15
units per semester. 28
Frequently Asked
Questions
BS Mathematics Curriculum
What is the maximum number of units we
8
are allowed to take in a semester?
In the BS Mathematics curriculum, the
maximum number of units prescribed in a
semester is 18 units. 21 units is the actual cap
per semester, but we do not recommend this
during this remote learning setup.

9 About Shifting/Transferring

You are allowed to take courses outside the

curriculum for at most 1 year.
You are required to sign a document stating
that you are trying to shift, and you need to take
the subjects required by the admitting unit.
If you are not able to shift out after 1 year, you are
bound to follow the curriculum.
Possible consequences are:
Delay in Graduation
Violation of MRR (Maximum Residence Rule)
NOTE: There is no priority in the enlistment of math
courses not prescribe in the curriculum.
TIP: Take GE courses that are easy and suited for shifting.
This is subject to your program adviser

29
Frequently Asked
Questions
Institute of Mathematics Library
Is there payment for the processes of
1
resources?
No, you just need to show your form 5 and
use your UP Email.

2 Are the resources available for printing?

Books given are not for printing, this is only for

viewing, not for downloading or printing due to
copyright law.

Can I borrow a physical copy of the

3
books?

This is tricky because of the pandemic, but

you can email the IM Lib for us to arrange you
to get it.

30
Frequently Asked
Questions
Institute of Mathematics Library
What is the maximum number of books
4
that we can borrow?
Before the pandemic, the maximum is 5 books
per undergraduate student and 10 books per
graduate student. Now, unlimited ebooks and a
maximum of 5 printed books are allowed for
borrowing. You can borrow books for a duration
of up to 2 weeks for CS Library and 1-3 months
IM Library.

5 How fast is the processing of requests?

It depends on speed of the internet

connection, but requests are processed
normally within the day.

Are the instructors’ references in the

6
Library?
Normally instructors ask first if the references
are available in the library but if it is not
available, we find ways by asking other libraries
or by trying to find those resources.
