 WHAT IS 18TH CENTURY?


= In Europe, the eighteenth century was a period of intellectual, social, and
political ferment. It can be referred to as the age of enlightenment.

Why it was called the age of enlightenment because
In this era, the peoples or the thinkers wanted new priority on the importance of
human reason(belief), or to investigate to discover truth(searching for truth).

THE RESTORATION
The first 40 years of this period is often referred to as restoration period. This period
signifies a more stable political and religious environment. It was a revolutionary
change brought by Charles ll in life and literature.
During this period there was also a religious and political conflict.

NEO-CLASSICAL PERIOD
It was a period which came into rise after the Renaissance Period and dominated the
European literature and lasted until the end of 18 th century.
This period is called the neoclassical period because its writers looked back to the
ideals and art forms of classical times, emphasizing even more then there
Renaissance predecessors the classical ideals of orders and the rational control.
The neoclassical writers aimed to articulate general truth through their writing to
communicate to others more than to express themselves.

AGE OF REASON
The period from 1700-1750 is often referred to as the Augustan Age. This age
brought increased emphasis on a rational and scientific approach to the issue of the
time. The literature of this period is largely political and secular.
