Urban areas offer several types

with just one incident. Similarly,
an accident or criminal act could
also result in dozens of fatalities.

On a recent trip away we had to have light, wheel-less, robust travel luggage, so
Jean took the Aquapac Upano. At first she was not so sure about the roll top and
velcro closure but, after a long and pretty testing African trip, it proved to be fine; in
fact very simple to use and effective.

We were not expecting to get wet but dirt, dust and sand were a definite. Actually wet could easily have been
11 an issue, as we used a lot of bush airstrips and less sophisticated airports and open transport, so it would
have been so easy for it to be on a luggage trolley out in the torrential rain. If this had been so it would not
have been a concern, as this duffel is a sealed bag. It is closed by rolling the top a few times, which is then
secured by Velcro and further more by adjustable straps. Trapped air can be released by a bit of pressure
and the built-in non-return valve lets the air out. So the packed bag can easily be volume reduced and further
pulled down by the additional straps at either end. Two carry straps are provided which double as shoulder
harness so it can be carried as a back pack. When not in use the Upano can be rolled up to be very small.

We certainly put it to the test on this trip and the Upano passed for sure. A little grubby now, but still fit for the
next trip.

10: There was a lot of small aircraft flying on our trip and the Upano was ideal being light and flexible.

specialised item of footwear, which I still use. Contrary to the

they were not ideal perhaps, but okay.

T
he civvy designation of these is the Aku NS564 Spider Mk.2, but they are known
in certain military environments as the Navy SEAL Boot. The clue is in the name.
Since my first review in 2012, this boot had been further evolved and tweaked
and I have to say it is hard to really see the difference. But it is there, and they
certainly feel different. Originally developed for the US Navy SEALs they have now
been adopted on this side of The Pond and have had input from UK SF personnel.

Aimed to give the wearer much more ‘feel’ than clumpy traditional military style boots
that have much thicker soles, waterproof membranes, high leg and so on. The NS
564s are for the ‘racing snake’; i.e. fast and light. The soles (Vibram SWOT) are quite
thin but no less grippy, designed to support and protect but not interfere with the
connection of the foot with the outside world. The sole is backed up all around by
a rubber rand to protect the wearer’s toes, heels up to the Achilles, and around the
sides. It is this area in particular that has come in for some upgrading.

These are not boots for fully loaded yomping over soggy mountains; the Aku Pilgrims
fit that brief. The NS564 are also not waterproof but they are highly breathable, partly
due to the Air 8000 fabric. Designed for long hot active days on your feet these boots
certainly do not disappoint.

13: Along the side of the toe the new rand offers both more support to the wearer’s foot as well as
additional protection
