Here at ASGL, the goal for all students is to become global citizens. As it is a mission of

not only the school but of mine as well, to be brought into how the real world works. A global

citizen is someone that has respect for the world’s cultural diversity and all people alike,

someone that takes action and has that honesty not only for themselves, but for others around

them. A global citizen displays important qualities such as empathy, understanding, and respect.

While here at ASGL, I have learned and developed many of the IB learner profiles such as

communicator, risk-taker, inquirer, open-minded, knowledgeable, and thinker. Someone

who I look up to and believe to be a good example of what a global citizen is, is Emma Watson.

Personally to me, a global citizen means to acknowledge the interconnections between

people, environments, and societies around the world. The person I chose to be my global citizen

was Emma Watson. Emma is an excellent example of a global citizen and can best be described

as humanitarian, educated, and admirable. Watson is not only an accomplished actor, but has also

had the honor to serve as the UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador. This organization was created

to fight discrimination against women, in areas such as education, health, employment, human

rights, and others. Emma Watson was a risk-taker as well, gender equality is a big issue we face

here during our time where “men are the superior race”, Emma knew that if she proceeded with

what she was doing that she would get hate from those who don’t believe in gender equality.

While she was doing a good job at recruiting women for the organization, she was a thinker

because she had to come up with ways that would get young men and boys to stand up alongside
her for gender equality. She did this to show that women and girls were not the only ones

fighting for equality.

During the seven years at ASGL, I’ve grown a great deal. In the beginning of freshman

year, I was an incredibly doubtful person in myself. Thoughts filled my mind such as, “Am I

making a mistake? What if they think I'm weird and dont like me?”. Things like these were what

ran through my head everytime I stepped into class. For me, talking to new people wouldn't

come easy, but it was not as bad as the lack of motivation to want to learn. During my classes, it

didn’t matter what class it was, I just didn’t care and would much rather spend my time drawing

on my paper. When the pandemic hit, it just made it so much worse, I would sleep through all my

zoom classes or just not login at all. With all this set and done I decided to be an inquirer.

Around the beginning of junior year, I had this math class where we were learning about

advanced equations. During the class I tried doing the equations and got the wrong answer. The

thing was I hated being wrong so It made me want to try again and again till I got it right. With

this I also became open-minded because I also started to learn about other cultures, perspectives,

and values. This experience has allowed me to grow in the knowledge I possess of these three

beliefs .

With time being like a flowing river, continuing to use the IB learner profiles is

something that I will do. In the future, I will be working towards being a surgeon. As a future

surgeon I will have to be knowledgeable because I will have to use all of the surgical

information that I learned and apply it into my job. With this career path that I have chosen for

myself I will face many challenges and make tough decisions. As a part of the job I will have to

be a communicator with not only the families of my patients, but of my surgical team as well.
That way we all maintain the same goal, which is the best outcome for the patient. With the help

of ASGL I have been taught to not be afraid of using the Ib learner profiles skills, confidence in

order to become a global citizen.

To be globally competent to all students is essential not only here at ASGL but all around

the globe, this will allow them to grow on a personal perspective. All students will have the skills

they need to handle whatever the real world has waiting for them, whether it be something nice

or something not so nice. Here at this school I am given plenty of opportunities to expand on

what I know about other cultures that aren’t my own, given the skills necessary to handle what's

out there after highschool, and the self assurance in myself that I can do anything. Risk-taking is

of daily use for me because everyday are new decisions I must make for myself. If it weren’t for

the tough decisions that I made throughout my highschool career I wouldn't be where I was

today. During high school the IB learner profiles have been there to paint me a pathway to show

me the person/character I am today.
