• a political declaration now known as the ‘Johannesburg Declaration
on Sustainable Development’;
• the ‘Johannesburg Plan of Implementation’, a 65-page document
restating existing targets e.g. Millennium Declaration Goals
• and a limited number of new commitments; and ‘Type II’
commitments by governments and other stakeholders, including
business and non governmental organisations.

Sustainable Development is built on three interdependent
and mutually reinforcing pillars - economic development,
social development and environmental protection – which
established
must be at local, national, regional and global levels.
