What was the last meeting’s topic? formulate a claim of policy based on claim
of facts.
B. Motivation Answers may vary.
The Woodcutter
Once upon a time, there lived a poor
woodcutter named Ram. He lived in a small
hut on the outskirts of the village. Ram
would go in the forest every day and chop
trees for wood. He sold this wood to a rich
merchant and earned his livelihood. Though
poor, the woodcutter was sincere and
honest.
One day, while chopping a tree near the
river, the ax slipped out of his hand and fell
into the river. The river was very deep and
since that was his only ax, he worried. How
would he cut wood and earn his livelihood
now?
He prayed to God for his ax. He prayed so
sincerely that God actually appeared! When
He asked Ram what the problem was, he
told Him the whole episode. God, then put
his hand into the river and took out a silver
ax. The woodcutter said it wasn’t his. God
continued looking and then found a golden
ax.
The woodcutter refused to accept it too!
What good is a golden ax to a poor
woodcutter? He needed his iron ax. God
finally smiled and pulled out his iron ax.
The woodcutter was extremely happy and
thanked God for finding his ax. God was
very happy with his honesty. So, he
rewarded him by giving him the silver and
the golden ax too! The woodcutter was
overwhelmed and jumped with joy!
The value of being honest.

neighbor by uttering too much profanity.

C. Discussion
Claims of value are arguable statements.
Discussions normally happen when one
attempts to prove that something is more or
less desirable than the other.

Aesthetic and moral arguments are value

claims. Statements on the quality of a
particular work of art fall under aesthetics
while claims justifying the rightness or
wrongness of some actions are moral claims.

Aesthetic

 Values that reflect your feelings

about what has beauty in nature and
life.
 They reveal appreciation for the way
things look, sound, feel, taste, and
smell.
Moral

 It refers to a set of principles that

guide an individual on how to
evaluate right versus wrong.
 It justifies the decisions, intentions,
actions, and personal character of a
person.
The example, “It’s very inhumane to
humiliate someone in public” explicitly
states the inappropriateness of the deed and
this is precisely a moral claim.
In addition, value claims are based on a set
of personally held criteria. An example of
this is ‘I prefer salty food to sweet food, so
potato chips are a better snack than a candy
bar.’
You have to remember that claims of value
are almost subjective; thus, you have to
prepare persuasive explanations and
arguments to defend and prove your stand.
One of the strategies that you could use is to
always touch on the emotions of the people
and to consider their possible beliefs and
opinions on the issue.

D. Application
Directions: Identify the claims of value
manifested in each of the following
excerpts. Write your answers on the space
provided.

What will schools look like under the ‘new

normal’? (Excerpt)
By Jess Obana

1. Over the past decade, online education

has emerged as an innovative teaching and
learning method. Countless research devoted
to the benefits of online education suggests
that online learning is as good as face-to-
face classroom learning.

2. Online learning is not new. What is new

is that schools are embracing it as
vital to how the next generation of learners
is taught.

3. As governments ease out of lockdowns,

we will begin to see schools adopting the
blended learning approach. The conscious
and careful blending of face-to-face
instruction and online methods can draw the
best of both worlds and create the best
teaching and learning experience.

4. The biggest challenge for schools

transitioning to online learning is the
widening inequality of access to and usage
of information and communications
technology (ICT).

5. The COVID-19 crisis presents an

opportunity for the education sector to
come together, forge connections and share
what works. We may have not seen this
before the crisis, but we are missing a
greater opportunity if we do not do this now. Claims of value are arguable statements.
