Weatherford American Aero” Cranes ANTI TWO-BLOCKING SYSTEM When operating a crane, the operator could inadvertently raise the block or overhaul ball to the point where it would come into contact with the boom point sheaves. This is called "Two-Blocking" CAUTION: The Anti Two-Blocking system is a safety device intended to assist the crane operator in safe operation of the crane. This device is not intended to be an automatic stop for the hoist winches or the boom winch, The operator is to be aware at all time of the position of the block and overhaul ball relative to the boom point and endeavor to prevent contact between the block or ball and the boom point. WARNING: Two-blocking could cause severe structural damage to the crane and could result in serious personal injury. Two-blocking can result breaking the hoist wire rope and allow the load being lifted to fall in an uncontrolled manner. This dangerous situation could also happen by lowering the crane boom when the block or overhaul ball is near the boom point. NOTE: The anti two-blocking system should be carefully activated as 2 daily inspection point to verify that the system is working correctly. In order to avoid these accidents, an anti two-blocking device has been installed on the crane. This device is designed to stop the main and auxiliary hoisting functions and the boom hoist lowering function if either the block or the overhaul ball become too close to the boom point. The systems are usually configured to stop the block or ball somewhere between 5 ft. (1.5 m) and 15 ft. (4.6 m) from the boom point. This distance will vary with the length of the chain suspending the assembly hanging from the boom and the hoisting speed of the winch when the block or ball contacts one of the assemblies. Lowering of the main or auxiliary hoist to eliminate contact with the anti two-blocking assembly suspended from the boom will return the crane to normal operation The basic system consists of a valve or switch assembly for each hoist line, hydraulic piping or wiring and a hydraulic control logic to stop the hoist raising functions and the boom lowering function. The assembly is installed around the wire rope of the main and auxiliary hoists, as applicable. See the Hydraulic Schematic for details of the hydraulic logic and the Electrical Schematic for details of the electrical connections, as applicable (Document No. 140-000-00 Page 1 of 7 Weatherford American Aero’ Cranes The anti two-blocking system is available in three basic configurations. The first is an all hydraulic configuration. The second is an all electric assembly. The third is a combination of the electric and hydraulic assemblies. In all three cases the major component of the anti two-block assembly which is suspended from the boom is the same. This assembly consists of an upper half connected to a chain which is suspended from the boom. The lower half is suspended from the upper half and designed to be lifted by contact with the block or ball. If the block or overhaul ball comes into contact with the lower half of the assembly it pushes the lower half up into contact with the underside of the upper half. This action activates a valve and / or switch in the upper half of the assembly. The valve and switch in turn activate the logic circuits to interrupt the winch functions. In some cases the switches activate visual and audible alarms. Such alarms vary with customer requirements. See the Electrical Schematic for details. The valves in the assembly are a cartridge type, three way manually activated hydraulic valve. The switches are magnetic proximity switches. CAUTION: The override (which is provided is a customer specified option) should always be used with great care as structural damage can occur as the hoist block or overhaul ball is brought closer to the boom point and sheave cluster. The anti two-blocking override does NOT override the interruption of the lowering of the boom.
