● What does a seed need to grow?

Standard(s)

● LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms

Objectives
● Students will identify what plants need to grow.

Materials and Equipment

● Student Ipads
● Teacher Ipad
● Smartboard
● Soil
● Water
● Seeds
● Cups

Procedures

Introduction

● “Today we are going to be reviewing plants again and planting our own.”

Anticipatory Set/Activating Learning Strategies

● Review with students about what plants need to grow
○ They should know that they need water, sunlight, oxygen, and soil

Sequence of Lesson
Model
● We will plant our seeds together as a class.
● I will model for the students how we will plant each one and pick sticks for students to
help.
● Talk about watering plants and how much water they think that a seed needs in order to
grow correctly.
● We will plant 4 different seeds and water them each differently each day.
Independent practice
● Show students the wanted poster assignment
○ They will have to create a name for a plant and draw a picture
■ Example: Sally the Sunflower
● They will then draw things that the plant will need to survive surrounding it such as a
sun, water, soil, and oxygen.
● They will be given the rest of the science period to work on this activity until specials
○ They likely will not finish today and will be able to resume this activity
tomorrow.

Closure/Summarizing Strategy

● We will talk about their ideas for their wanted posters as a class to wrap up if time
allows.
Assessment/Evaluation
● I will assess students through their discussions and their wanted posters.

Special Considerations

Early Finishers

● If students finish early, they can go on reflex math on their Ipads.

Remediation

● I will model how to plant the flower for the students.

Enrichment
● Students will use their knowledge of living things to understand how plants grow and
what they need to grow.

Special Accommodations

● Walk around helping students who may need extra support for the independent portion.
