Responding to the Needs of Kindergarten Pupils

Context and Rationale

The emergence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Philippines was first


suspected and investigated in January 2020 by the Tropical Medicine and Health
section of the Department of Health in the country. It was not until March that the
government declared a national health emergency thereby a lockdown to all cities
and provinces was implemented as one of the preventive measures against COVID-
19.
This pandemic affected all private and government agencies. It can be recalled
that the implementation of lockdown and home quarantine were done in the middle
of March of the same year. In compliance to the said mandate, the Department of
Education declared the end of the classes although it was earlier as scheduled. Since
then, the opening of classes posed a challenge for all educators as well as the internal
and external stakeholders to continue educating the young. Despite the challenges,
the department has successfully opened the classes for this school year 2020-2021
adapting the alternative delivery mode of learning in the new normal.

The recipients
The primary duty of a teacher is to develop the basic literacy skills of his
learners such as reading, writing and numeracy. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am
very well motivated to make my learners read at an earlier stage. But how can this
be possible without our face-to-face interaction? Thus, the proponent developed an
innovation, Sinugbuanong Binisaya 26-Video-Clip Tingog sa Letra Aa-Zz for
Kindergarten learners of Canitoan Elementary School where she is currently
assigned.

Background of the Innovation


The main objective of this innovation is to teach kindergarten children the letter
sound letters / beginning reading specifically in Mother Tongue or Sinugbuanong
Binisaya texts or words. Considering the real setting of education today where face-
to-face teaching is impossible, giving and providing video clip of Sinugbuanong
Binisaya 26-Video-Clip Tingog sa Letra Aa-Zz Pagsugod sa Pagbasa of Canitoan
Elementary School Kindergarten level is timely. Indeed, making supplemental video
clips preparatory to reading is essential to kindergarten pupil in learning to read.

Discussion on the Innovation


Sinugbuanong Binisaya 26-Video-Clip Tingog sa Letra Aa-Zz a is a video clip
that can be viewed in the official FB page of the proponent. The video clip can be
accessed easily through downloading it. In some cases where internet connection is
unavailable, a copy can be saved in a storage device or USB and in a compact disc.
This will then be played in DVD player and displayed using their television at home.

How was it made?


Sinugbuanong Binisaya 26-Video-Clip Tingog sa Letra Aa-Zz was developed
using MS Powerpoint and Filmora 9 applications. These are essential tools for video
makers to use to create video presentations. The proponent gathered images from
google and created design in MS PowerPoint. Audio recording was done using
Filmora 9. Transition and animation are made wonderful to make the video clips
most captivating to children’s attention and at the same time achieve the educational
value of the video. Each video clip will take about almost 1 to 2 minutes.

How does it work/ Adaptation


Sinugbuanong Binisaya 26-Video-Clip Tingog sa Letra Aa-Zz Pagsugod sa
Pagbasa can be played on TV when stored in storage device or in a compact disc. It
is also available on the proponent FB page. The learners will just click the video clip
and it will automatically play for them to watch and listen. Part of the video is an
exercise where they are told to imitate the sound of the letter. By doing this, the
pupil can learn to say the sound of the letter correctly. This practice is based on the
idea that phonics instruction teaches children how to decode letters into their
respective sounds, a skill that is essential for them to read.

How well (planned)


In view of the main objective of the proponent, she sought the help of her co-
teachers during their LAC session, attendance, certificates, and program matrix are
manifested. This is because the proponent thought that this piece of learning
material will be used and adapted not only for kindergarten learners but also for
pupils in the grade level who are struggling readers.
