DISPLACEMENT MEASUREMENT USING INDUCTIVE PICK - UP

The variable reluctance type displacement sensor is very useful for certain

laboratory measurements of stress, thickness , vibration & shock . This is a non

contact type displacement measurement transducer.

Inductance is determined by number of turns of coil, geometrical configura-

tion and effective permeability. Variation in any one of these caused due to dis-

placement results in change in inductance by ∆ L.

This change in inductance is measured using AC inductive bridge.

EXPERIMENTAL SET UP :

The transducer that is supplied along with this equipment is operating on the

principle of variation in permeability or reluctance of magnetic circuit.

Ferromagnetic core is coupled to the micrometer rod.

The inductive coili mounted on the micrometer and as the rod of micrometer

moves in or out of the coil , the inductance increases or decreases accordingly.

SIGNAL CONDITIONING CIRCUIT :

Change in inductance is measured using inductive bridge.

AC sinusoidal exciation is given to the Inductance bridge at point AB.

Two arms of the inductive bridge are resistive & other two arms are inductive.

The coil mounted on micrometer works as a variable inductance element L1

(Active) & fixed value inductance L2 (Dummy) forms two inductive arms of the

bridge.

REFERENCE MANUAL

The resistance arms are varible and is used to make Zero or minimum

bridge output for zero displacement of core of L1 coil.

The output of the bridge is rectified and then filtered. The filtered output (D.C.) is

further amplified by a D.C. amplifier and connected to digital voltmeter.

At the output amplifier zero adjust and gain adjust potmeter are provided for

zero & gain adjustment.

PROCEDURE :

(1) Make power on the unit.

(2) Keep the micrometer for zero position.

(3) For this setting , adjust zero reading on DIgital voltmeter by zero adjust pot of

output DC Amplifier A2.

(4) Now move the core in proper steps (of say 2mm) by knob of micrometer and

note corresponding output voltage on meter. Tabulate the result .

Plot the graph of input displacement against output meter reading .

The graph shows non- linear relationship between input & output.

Observe the wave form on CRO at test point ,

1. AC exciation . (A B)

2. Bridge output (C D)

As the rod moves from zero position to higher side ,bridge balance

changes. Observe the output voltage across point CD for corresponding

input displacement of micrometer on CRO . Tabulate the result.
