Problem 1

The 7-meter pole has a fixed end at O. A cable is stretched from

the force end A of the pole to point B where the person is holding.
If the tension in the cable is 750 N, determine the moment about O
of the force exerted by the cable at A.

Solution

The moment MO of the tension AB about O is obtained by

forming the cross product or vector product

MO = rA/O x TAB

where rA/O is the vector from A to O and TAB is the tension in the
cable multiplied to its unit vector. Solving rA/O and TAB into
rectangular components (e.g. xi^ + y ^j + zk^ )

rA/O = (0i^ + 7 ^j + 0k^ ) m

rA/O = 7 ^j m

4 i^ – 6 ^j+ 2 k^
TAB = 750 N
√ 42 +(−6)2 +22
4 i^ – 6 ^j+ 2 k^
TAB = 750 N
2 √14

Substituting the values to the equation of MO

4 i^ – 6 ^j+ 2 k^
MO = 7 ^j m x 750 N
2 √ 14

Mx = [(7)(750 N ) – 0]i^
2 √ 14
Mx = 1403.12i^ N•m
My = (0 – 0) ^j
My = 0 ^j N•m

Mz = [0 – (7)(750 N )]k

Mz = 4209.36k^ N•m
MO = Mxi^ + My ^j + Mzk^
= (1403.12i^ + 4209.36k^ ) N•m
