Hey! Look at this site. Now look at this one. One is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One isn’t. Both
are equally important to the modern world and both represent interchange of human values and represent a
masterpiece of human creative genius. Those just some criteria that the Callanish Standing Stones match
successfully, as well as Stonehenge. So why is one on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one isn’t?

The Callanish Standing Stones is a stone formation formed in Scotland around 5,000 years ago. They were
formed around the same time as Stonehenge. The Callanish Standing Stones represent a masterpiece of human
creative genius and also represent an important interchange in human values. These are the reasons why the
Callanish Standing Stones – is worth preserving and making it on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These
reasons are also within the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Criteria.
The Callanish Standing Stones represent a masterpiece of human creative genius because they are
outstandingly creative technological achievements in prehistoric times. This was one of the first advancements
towards monumental structures in humanity. This was also one of the first advancements of astronomy, which
is a significant part of our modern day lives. The stones were used as a lunar observatory site – 5,000 years ago!
You may think that this is nothing, as we can all just get telescopes to look at the moon. However, this was
5,000 years ago! This undoubtedly demonstrates how Callanish Standing Stones represents genius
masterpieces because they are creative technological achievements of prehistoric times.

The Callanish Standing Stones also represent an important interchange in human values because this site has an
unwavering impact on architects, artists, historians and archaeologists and retains the great potential of future
research. The stones are arranged in a way so that it resembles a Christian cross. (See key source) It ranks high
in many heritage values such as archaeological importance, its aesthetic appeal and unquestionable visual
impact. Visitors that have been to the site were amazed by the visual impact. This site has also demonstrated
the evolution of monumental architecture and the continuous use and shaping of landscapes since it was ever
formed. This is shown by how stones are taller at the bottom of the hill and shorter at the top to create an even
feel. These are reasons why the Callanish Standing Stones also represent an important interchange in human
values because this site has an unwavering impact on architects, artists, historians and archaeologists and
retains the great potential of future research.

Despite these stones being of a great importance to our world, some think that there are inadequate reasons
for this site to be preserved and making onto the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These stones are not as
popular as Stonehenge, so therefore they are not worth preserving. Only one of these sites are needed for
preservation.

The Callanish Standing Stones are:

 Around the same age as Stonehenge

 Share the same values as Stonehenge
 Equally important as Stonehenge

Just because a site is not as popular as a major site, it doesn’t mean that they cannot be preserved and on the
list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Overall, it can be stated that the Callanish Standing Stones are worthy of preservation and becoming a site on
the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is because of its representation of a masterpiece of human
creative genius. This is also because the Callanish Standing Stones also represent an important interchange
between human values. If preserved, these monumental stones will continue to stand tall and represent many
human values. These exceptional stones must be preserved now!
