Electricity usage in the European Union (EU) has been a topic of interest for many
years. In 2021, total net electricity generation in the EU was 2 785 Terawatt hours (TWh)
which was a reduction of 0.1% compared with the year before . The level of net

electricity generation in the EU in 2021 was 2% lower than its relative peak in 2008,
when total output stood at 2 844 TWh .1

The European Union has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
and increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix. The EU aims to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels . The

share of renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption is expected to


reach at least 32% by 2030 .
