Freedom of speech is a fundamental right that is recognized by many countries around

the world. In Europe, freedom of speech is protected by the European Convention on


Human Rights . This convention guarantees the right to freedom of expression and

information, which includes the right to hold opinions and to receive and impart
information without interference by public authority.
In ancient Greece, freedom of speech was also an important ideal. The Greeks were
pioneers of free speech and their theater, literature, and educational institutions
explored the human experience, freedom of expression, and questioning of authority .

However, like contemporary societies, ancient Greece did not allow complete freedom
of speech. Leaders, philosophers, artists, and everyday citizens wrestled with the
boundaries of free speech .
