Engagement with New Material

What will you do to Together, the class will read a story about a young boy in school. The story will
engage students in the have 5-10 paragraphs. For some paragraphs, I point to the words as the entire
active learning of the class reads together. For other paragraphs, students play “popcorn” and take
new material? turns reading the paragraphs.

What will you do to Reading a few of the paragraphs together (all at once) will ensure that all
ensure that all students students are engaged. All students will also be expected to answer the

numbered list in which they write the answers for each question.

Students will practice speaking by engaging in comprehension checks after

Students will practice reading by reading the written text together with the
class.
Module 4 –Assignment - Lesson Sharing
Students will practice writing by writing the answers to the comprehension
questions about the text.

To apply their skills to other contexts, I also ask discussion questions in

addition to the comprehension questions. This gives students opportunities to
use the target language while connecting the current topic to other contexts.

Assessment

How will you assess I will assess learning of the objectives mainly through the answers to the
their learning of the comprehension questions. The goal is to read and understand the story, and
objectives? the answers to the comprehension questions show if the students have
understood what was happening in the story.

Closing

Module 4 –Assignment - Lesson Sharing

To open the lesson, I will have the students play a five-minute Blooket game to review the

vocabulary that they learned the day before. This is the vocabulary that the story that they will read will

use. This gives them a minute to get settled before the story but also prepares them for it. The

sequencing of the activities of the lesson will flow naturally: reading, pausing often for checks and

comprehension questions, asking discussion questions after the story, and reviewing the comprehension

questions together as a class. This sequencing allows some independence, active involvement, checks for

understanding, as well as reassurance that they can review at the end. This activity will easily take 30-40

minutes to complete because most sentences need to be broken down for learners, and discussion

questions in the target language can last as long as the teacher allows them. Finally, the lesson will be

closed by having the students correct their answers (with a different colored pen so that I can still monitor

their progress) so they can learn, seek explanations, and improve.
