EXPERIMENT NO.

08
AIM: To implement WAN topology using optical fiber links.

SOFTWARE: CISCO Packet Tracer version 7.3.0

THEORY:

A wide area network (WAN) is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic
area. WANs are used to connect LANs and other types of networks together so that users and
computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. WANs are
often built using leased lines. At each end of the leased line, a router connects the LAN on one side
with a second router within the LAN on the other. Many technologies are available for wide area
network links. Examples include circuit-switched telephone lines, radio wave transmission, and
optical fiber. New developments have successively increased transmission rates.
Fiber optic provides extremely high data rates over great distances, and fiber optic cables are used to
provide telecommunication links between continents using cables laid across the seabed. Because
many WAN connections need high data rate links between service providers based in different
countries, fiber optics are commonly used.
Fiber optical networks use signals encoded onto light to transmit information among various nodes of
a telecommunication network. They operate from the limited range of a local-area network (LAN) or
over a wide-area network (WAN).

PROCEDURE:

1. Select all the devices (PC, router PT, Multilayer switch 3650-24ps) as shown to create a WAN
network.
2. To create a WAN topology using fiber optic cable we need to add gigabit ethernet modules in
each of the selected PC’s and routers and AC power supply in the switch.

PC→ Physical→ turn off supply and remove current module → add 1FGE module →turn on
supply. Do this for all PC’s

Switch → Physical → add two AC power supply, add 3 GLC-LH-SMD modules to support
fiber cable

Router→ physical → turn off supply→ remove present 2 modules and ADD new three 1FGE
modules → switch on the supply
3. Connect all the devices using fiber cable and assign the IP address to each device as shown. In
the figure below.
4. Statically assign IP address and default gateway to each PC
Click on PC → Desktop → IP Configuration→ static Type IP Address: and default
gateway
To configure router
5. Click on Router0 → config→ interface→ select Gigabit Ethernet / and assign IP address
and subnet mask for that particular link. Turn ON port status.
Assign IP for all Gigabit Ethernet interface.
Now add all network address using RIP.
Router0→ config→ Routing→ RIP add network address
6. Repeat step 6 for router1
7. Now try to ping from one PC to the other one of different network
Click on PC→ desktop→ command prompt
Ping 192.168.25.2
Also, we can trace the route through which the communication takes place
In command prompt give command
tracert 192.168.25.2
