Workflow summary
The BD FACSuite™ application upgrade process includes:
l Backing up the database as a precautionary measure
l BD FACSuite™ installation, including uninstallation of any pre-existing version of
the application
l Installation of documentation for the updated version of BD FACSuite™, including
uninstallation of any pre-existing version of the documentation

Backing up the database

As a precautionary measure, this procedure must be completed before the
BD FACSuite™ application upgrade.
Note: To use the Backup and Restore Utility, the account that you use to log in to
Microsoft Windows must have administrative privileges.

Back up the databases

To back up the BD FACSuite™ database:
1. Double-click the BD FACSuite™ Backup and Restore utility icon on the desktop.
2. We recommend keeping the default locations that are provided by the Backup
and Restore Utility. If you select a different location for your backups by clicking
the Change Settings button, ensure that you have the appropriate access rights
for that location. Otherwise, a message will be displayed stating that access is
denied.
Do not rename backup files. In particular, do not delete the date/time stamp from
a file name. Otherwise, the backup software will not recognize the renamed
backup image. You can create a user-specific folder and back them up into that
folder.
3. Click Back Up.
11

4. The Back Up window opens, indicating the required hard disk space. If the
estimated space required is greater than the amount available, the software
prompts you to free up additional space and try again.
5. Verify that adequate hard disk space is available and click Back Up.
6. The backup process starts and displays a progress bar.
7. On completion, click Finish to close the window.
8. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\BD\FACSuite\BD Backup and store the backup image
on an external storage device (for example, on a network, server, or removable
media).

Uninstalling and reinstalling the

BD FACSuite™ application
Before you begin
l We recommend that you run a disk defragmentation procedure before installing
new software.
l Make sure no other programs are running during the installation procedure.
l If the BD FACSuite™ application already exists on the system, running the setup
program will uninstall it. You must then run the setup program again to reinstall
the application.
12 BD FACSuite™ Application Installation Instructions

Procedure
To upgrade or install the application:
1. Connect the application installation removable media to the computer.
Use Windows Explorer to view the media content. Find and double-click the
setup.exe file.
2. Before uninstallation/reinstallation of the BD FACSuite™ application starts, you
may be prompted to allow installation of any required components, which can
take several minutes. For example, if the version of Microsoft .NET Framework
required by BD FACSuite™ is not already installed on the workstation, it will be
installed and the workstation will prompt you to reboot. Multiple reboots may
occur and the process may take 30 minutes or more to complete.
If the installer does not resume, restart it by clicking setup.exe in the installation
media contents.
Caution! If Windows Updates start, allow the update process to run to
completion before continuing. Otherwise, the BD FACSuite™ application
installation may not complete successfully.

3. If the BD FACSuite™ application already exists on the system, running the setup
program will uninstall it. The system begins the process by displaying the following
message:

a. Click OK to uninstall the existing version.

On completion, the system displays a Maintenance Complete dialog.
b. Click Finish.
c. Run the setup program again to install the upgraded application.
4. The initial installation screen displays the application name and version number.
When it is displayed, click Next.
5. In the License Agreement screen, select the option to accept the terms of the
license agreement, then click Next.
6. Verify the destination folder, then click Next.
13

We recommend using the default location, given as C:\Program Files\. Do not

select the C drive itself as a destination folder. The installation utility will install
the application in its own BD FACSuite™ subfolder in the specified destination
folder.
7. In the Setup Type screen, select one of the following options, then click Next.
l Yes. Select this option if the computer is connected to an instrument and will
be used for sample acquisition.
l No. Select this option if the computer is not connected to an instrument and
will be used for analysis only.
8. In the Database Server screen, click Next.
If the BD FACSuite™ application was previously installed and the database still
exists in the system, the Setup Type screen opens, which offers the following
options:
l Use existing database
l Install a new empty database
9. Select one of the options, then click Next.
Caution! Do not select the second option to install a new empty database.
This requires a BD Service Engineer to create the LW/LNW reference settings,
which are needed to successfully operate your BD FACSLyric™ system.
Contact your local BD support representative for more information.

Note: If you elect to install a new empty database, you will need to recreate the
lyse/wash and lyse/no wash (LW/LNW) reference settings.
10. Click Install to begin the installation.
11. Wait while the installer loads the application. (This can take several minutes.)
The installer loads the application and its supporting files in the appropriate
locations. A dialog opens indicating that the installation was successful.
12. Click Finish.
The dialog closes and the ReadMe file opens.
13. Review the ReadMe file carefully because it contains important information that is
not included in the accompanying documentation.
The ReadMe file is also saved in folder C:\Program Files\BD FACSuite™ or the
folder where you selected to install the application.
14. Disconnect the application installation removable media.
