Dr. Romantic
Season 1: Episode 11

While watching this episode there were scenes where I could further elaborate in
line with the lesson. Still, I would like to highlight the scene from 16:46 - 20:18. In this
particulate scene, a lawsuit was filed against the female doctor, Dr. Yun, due to her
drawing a blood sample for a test “without consent”. However, she got verbal consent in
her defense because the situation did not necessarily need a written form. Now, this is
where I would bring up the topic of informed consent. Informed consent is needed for a
medical procedure and/or treatment to be done legally because this means there is a
mutual understanding for both parties involved (patient and healthcare). This should
always be done, not unless it is an emergency situation. This is an important legal
document that is created for the safety of both the patient and medical workers in times
like what happened to Dr. Yun. So with what happened to the female doctor, this is a big
challenge because the patient is now denying the claim that he consented to the blood
test.

Another scene that I will highlight is the scene where the runaway soldier was
brought back to the hospital and needed to be rushed into the operating room. In that
scene, the 2 men from the military were trying to get the patient and move him to the
military hospital they have in their base camp. However, even though it is a complicated
decision, the Doctors really did well to adhere to the patient’s rights because they have
informed consent to perform the operation, they fought for the patient. They respected
the patient and did their job in treating him immediately. In this scene the right of the
patient to informed consent, choose their healthcare provider and facility, and
self-determination was followed. Justice was valued and embodied in this scene.

The last scene I want to talk about is 51:22- 53:35, in this scene a doctor was on
the phone with a president informing him about the current condition of the runaway
soldier. This is a violation of the right of the patient to privacy and confidentiality. He was
telling the president about the current charting and situation and this made me mad
because the poor soldier and in a life-threatening situation and he did not deserve to be
treated that way.

In my reflection on this episode, I’ve seen again how money and power can do
just to get what they want. If this power gets into a bad person’s hands, it becomes very
sinful. In fact, they are usually the worst people because they feel like the world is
revolving around them. But I am very proud of those healthcare workers who treat all
the patients equally. Their heart really is made of gold.
