Making sense of the Pinoy worker

Write your reflections on the presentation and discussion on the Pinoy work life.

Philippines has been one of the sought-after countries for investors and companies from
different industries around the globe. One of the compelling reasons why the country is appealing
to investors is due to the warmth of the Filipino people and the Filipino workforce’s strong work
ethic. According to the presentation, intrinsic motivation outweighs extrinsic motivation in terms
of what motivates Filipino workers at work. This suggests that Pinoy workers value themselves
more in reaching their full potential when they are given independence and control over their job
rather than being driven by external benefits. This demonstrates that, regardless of the labor
assigned to them, Filipinos find a way to enjoy and work hard; they are not triggered by different
rewards.

Filipinos are also born with leadership qualities. Our ideal, according to the presentation,
is kind, helpful, approachable, and understanding. With these characteristics, we can deduce that
Filipinos appreciate the feature of ‘pakikisama’, and this type of value may be a great method to
remind everyone, especially leaders, of the greater picture. Being a servant leader entails
remembering that you are part of a larger community. Filipino leaders are also available for
guidance. They don't simply make sure the job gets done; they also teach, mentor, and coach
individuals to promote learning and personal growth. Coordination is elicited by leadership,
ensuring that individuals are on track with the plan which will meet the goal and ambitions.

Individual judgments have two benefits over group decisions: synergy and knowledge
exchange. The concept of synergy is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When a
group reaches a choice, its judgment might be sharper than that of any of its individuals. Making
decisions in work groups may be accomplished in two ways: group polarization and groupthink.
Group polarization is the tendency of a group to make decisions that are more radical than the
members' original inclination. On the other hand, groupthink is a mode of thinking in which
individual members of small cohesive groups tend to accept a viewpoint or conclusion that
represents a perceived group consensus, whether or not the group members believe it to be valid,
correct, or optimal.

Labor relations occur largely between employers and employees within a system set up
and maintained by the government. Non-union workplaces avoid lengthy dismissal procedures and
can dismiss employees for contract violations, choose not to renew contracts, or simply end
employment without a specific reason in at-will workplaces. The disadvantages of non-union
workplaces are that they avoid long and complex disqualification processes and can reject
representatives for contract infringement, choose not to renew contracts, or simply end
employment without a specific reason in freely working environments. Unionized workplaces, on
the other hand, can create a stable work environment. Employees who belong to a union often have
better job security than nonunion workers, as well as more attractive wage and fringe benefits
packages. Its downsides include union bylaws that base salaries and promotions on seniority rather
than performance. Employee originality and uniqueness are discouraged in this type of
atmosphere. As a result, the employer misses out on productivity gains since the employee has no
motivation to do a better job. Furthermore, because union contracts stipulate specific compensation
and raises for each position, the employer has no mechanism to recognize and reward great
employee performance. Many firms that do not have a unionized staff have incentive systems in
place for employees who perform above and beyond standard expectations.
