 Argument essay – details and examples are provided for each idea

 Formatting (indented supporting ideas indicate relationship
between main and supporting ideas)

 Discussion essay – Two ways of organising a Discussion essay:

 Block pattern – presents the arguments for Side 1
o Followed by a transition paragraph (3 sentences)
o Followed by the arguments for Side 2
o Conclusion reveals writer’s favoured side (Side 2)

 Point by point pattern – presents arguments in pairs

o Most effective when arguments directly refute each
other
o Each point has a supporting and opposing argument
o Cohesive devices signal the side currently discussed
o Side 2 is the favoured side
