Abstract

This essay will look at the similarities and differences between local and international

sporting events. Firstly, it will discuss the four qualities of local sporting events such as the

certain number of players in a team, rules applied on the game, fees for spectators and

sporting grounds used. However it will then look at the similarities and differences with

international sporting events. Equally, it will look at the similarities such as certain number of

players in the field and rules of the game. In contrast, it will look at the differences such as

the fees paid by the spectators and sporting grounds used. The essay will conclude that fees

for local sporting events should not be expensive and the government should develop better

local sporting grounds.

Sporting events are events where a lot of people come and watch. These sporting

events are either recognized locally or internationally. These sporting events are good

because it helps to show talented players. It is important to know the similarities and

differences between local and international sporting events so that players are eager to train

extra hard in order to represent their home country. There are similarities and differences

between local and international sporting events.

Local sporting events have qualities such as the certain number of players in a team,

rules of the game, fees for spectators and the sporting grounds. Firstly, one of the qualities of

the local sporting events is having certain number of players in a team. In a game, there are

certain numbers of players that needs to represent a team, this is to keep the game fair and

balance in both sides of the team and also show the meaning of the event. For example, in

Digicel cup, there are fifteen players needed to play the match, no more and no less. Thus, no

one is affected since the game is kept fair and balance and the meaning of the event is not

destroyed.

In addition, another quality of local sporting events is the rules of the game. Rules of

the game are there to help players or competitors know what will be required of them before

playing the sport and during the game. For example, in athletics for the coco cola games, the

competitor that false starts is warned but will be disqualified if the competitor false starts

more than once (Diagram Group, 1990. pp.12). Thus, the competitors could be affected in a

way that if he or she is not familiar with the rules and also the time spent on training is

wasted.

Furthermore, the fee for spectators is another quality of local sporting events. Fees for

spectators will be raised to a minimum depending on where spectators get to sit. For example,

the coco cola games, the entry fees is twenty dollars for the grand-stand and ten dollars for
grounds, since it is a high school game, all high schools from all over Fiji is coming to play

representing their own school. Thus, spectators are affected since they pay to watch yet the

facilities are not that good.

Moreover, an additional quality of local sporting events is the sporting grounds. For

every big local event in a country, they will always need to use the biggest sporting ground

available in the country to provide for the large number of spectators that will be coming to

the event. For instance in Fiji, the TFL National Stadium is commonly used whenever there is

a big event taking place, this is because the TFL National Stadium is the biggest one in Fiji,

and this is seen in Coco Cola Games, the South Pacific Games, Digicel cup, Inter District

competition and also the Deans Trophy finals. Thus, the sporting ground is affected because

there will not be time for renovating and trying to develop better standards of the sporting

ground.

However, there are also international sporting events with the same qualities.

International sporting events have differences and similarities from the qualities of the local

sporting events. The similarities are the certain number of players in a team and rules of the

game, and the differences are the fees for spectators and the sporting grounds used.

There are similarities between local and international sporting events such as the

certain number of players in a team and the rules of the game. Equally, the certain number of

players in a team is one of the qualities from the local sporting events that are similar to the

international sporting events. Both local international and local sporting events require the

same number of players in team this is to help keep the meaning of the event. For instance,

digicel cup and the world cup, both require fifteen players to play in the field, no more and no

less. Thus, no one is affected because the meaning of the event is well kept.
In addition, another quality that is similar to the international sporting events is the

rules of the game. Rules of the games are there to be followed to ensure the players safety.

For example, in rugby, the players are required to wear safety boots and mouth guards, and

during the game, if the players happen to make a wrong tackle that is dangerous to the

opposing player, then that player is red carded or yellow carded depending on how dangerous

the opposing player is tackled. Thus, no one is affected since the players will not be seriously

injured but if they do then they will be taken care of by the best doctors and physiotherapists.

There are differences of local and international sporting events such as the fees for

spectators and sporting grounds. In contrast, one of the qualities of local sporting events that

are different from international sporting events is the fees spectators pay or the price of

tickets. The price of tickets varies, depending on the popularity of the event and number of

countries that are participating. For instance, the south pacific games ticket prices are

between ten to a thousand dollars while the Olympics 2012 the ticket prices are from fifty

seven dollars to fifty seven thousand Fiji dollars (T, Mark. and J, Sam. 2010). Thus, the

players’ family members can be financially affected since they will not be able to pay for the

tickets.

Unlike, the sporting grounds used for local sporting events, the sporting grounds used

for international sporting events is different. Sporting grounds used for international sporting

events is usually bigger since it will need to cater for all the spectators from all over the

world. For instance, the World Cup, it uses the Eden Park since it can cater for 60,000

spectators while for the Deans Cup Finals, then the national stadium is used since it can only

cater for 30,000 spectators (Allen, 2005. pp.44). Thus, no one is affected since the sporting

grounds used for international sporting events will be bigger and therefore cater for all

spectators that will come.

In conclusion, there are similarities and differences between local and international

sporting events. International sporting events have the same qualities as the local sporting

events but are different in the fees spectators pay and the sporting grounds used. Fees for

local sporting events, should not be expensive because the facilities are not that good and also

that sporting grounds for local events should be developed to a standard same as international

so that players are comfortable and are able to able to cope if they manage to play

international events. Local sporting events are ways of letting players know the expectation

needed for international sporting events.
