Section I has 7 questions, each worth 10 marks. Please answer any 4 out of these 7 questions.
Section II has 7 questions, each worth 20 marks. Please answer any 3 out of these 7 questions.
* Write concise, to-the-point answers. Longer is not necessarily better. Rambling answers that do not
convey an understanding of the subject will be penalized by lower marks. As far as possible, bullet-point
your answers. Please write neatly. After all, someone will have to read your handwriting. Clearly mark
question numbers so the evaluator knows which question you are answering.
Section I
Answer any 4 questions. Each question carries 10 marks.

1. What are the elements of fiction? Explain any two.

2. What is dialogue? Which story has good dialogue? How is it different from conversation?

3. What is a metaphor? How does it differ from a simile? Give anexample:

as an example(from the curriculum).

5. What is plot and how is it different from story?

6. What does the poem, Monet Refuses the Operation by Lisel Mueller talk about? Who is the
narrator of the poem? What is the central theme of the poem? What does it make you feel?

7. What is a character arc? Describe with an example of your own choice(from the curriculum).

Answer any 3 questions. Each question carries 20 marks.

somewhere. Start by getting something -- anything -- down on paper’. Do you agree? comment
on it.

9. Write in your own words one of the first stories you heard as a child. (with a beginning middle
and end)

10. Discuss the narrator’s voice in ‘The Overcoat’ on the following – Is the narrator a character in the
story. Is s/he a reliable narrator?

11. What do you remember about Akaky AkakievichBashmachkin or Bibi Haldar the protagonist of
‘The Overcoat’? How do these aspects of his character affect the story?

12. Describe a café which you are sitting in with details using “five senses’ in not less than 150 words.

13. What is figurative language? Identify the metaphors and similes in the passage.
