Modern Uses: Ephedra (Ephedra sinica), also called ma huang, is an herb that has been used in
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for more than 5,000 years, primarily to treat asthma, bronchitis, and
hay fever. Ephedra is also prescribed for symptoms of cold and flu, including nasal congestion, cough,
fever, and chills.

4. Ginseng Tonic

Common name: milkvetch


Modern Uses: Its root is used for health care purposes. Commonly combined with other herbs,
astragalus has been promoted as a dietary supplement for many conditions, including upper respiratory
infections, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, and chronic kidney disease,
among others.

9. Schizandra

Scientific name: Schisandra chinensis

Common name: magnolia-vine

Folkloric: Schisandra was found to be most helpful when used in people who had overall exhaustion and
low physical and mental performance.

Modern Uses: It's also been found to be especially helpful with certain neurological disorders, mental
disorders like schizophrenia, and in improving lung function.

10. Panax ginseng

Scientific name: Panax ginseng


Common name: ginseng, American Ginseng, Panax Pseudoginseng, Panax Schinseng, sang

Folkloric: It has also been used to strengthen the immune system and help fight off stress and disease.
Panax ginseng contains many active chemicals. The most important are called ginsenosides or
panaxosides.

Modern Uses: Both American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius, L.) and Asian ginseng (P. Ginseng) may
boost energy, lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduce stress, promote relaxation, treat diabetes,
and manage sexual dysfunction in men.

popular formulations in Ayurveda. Triphala is composed of three kinds of herb, Terminalia chebula,
Terminalia bellirica, and Emblica officinalis.

Modern uses: Test-tube and animal studies show that triphala may reduce inflammation caused by
arthritis, as well as prevent or limit the growth of certain types of cancer

Scientific name: Bacopa monnieri
Common name: Indian pennywort, water hyssop, thyme-leafed gratiola, herb of grace.

Folkloric: Brahmi is an Ayurvedic herb believed to lower inflammation, improve brain function, and
reduce symptoms of ADHD. It may also increase your body’s ability to deal with stress, though more
research is needed.

Modern uses: Studies also link it to improvements in learning rates, attention, memory, and information
processing, as well as reduced symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), such as
inattention, impulsivity, poor self-control, and restlessness

5. Cumin

Common name: Cumin, herbaceous annual plant
Folkloric: cumin has a way of insinuating itself deeply into the local cuisine, which is why it has become
one of the most commonly used spices in the world.

Modern uses: Research shows that cumin may boost the activity of digestive enzymes and facilitate the
release of bile from the liver, speeding digestion and easing the digestion of fats

Common name: Curcumin, Curcuma Longa, Turmeric Root, and Wild Curcuma.

Folkloric: turmeric was used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medical systems, as well as

Modern uses: This Ayurvedic spice may likewise help prevent or manage heartburn, bloating, nausea,
belching, and stomach ulcers. When applied to the skin, it may reduce symptoms of skin rash, including
redness, itching, and swelling

8. Gotu kola

Scientific name: Centella asiatica


Common name: gotu kola, Brahma-Buti, Centella, Divya, Hydrocotyle,

Folkloric: Gotu kola is a plant traditionally used in Chinese and Indonesian medicine. Known as the “herb
of longevity,” this plant is indigenous to the wetlands of Southeast Asia, where it's consumed as a juice,
tea, or supplement.

Modern uses: people with generalized anxiety disorder reported less stress, anxiety, and depression
after replacing their antidepressants with gotu kola for 60 days
